A characteristic control device which is provided with a basic control module which determines the amount of control used to control the output of a control subject based on predetermined input data and control parameters which relate output to the control subject to the input data and which controls the characteristics of the control parameters, a characteristic storage mechanism for storing the basic control parameters, and a characteristic automatic modification mechanism which determines, in accordance with predetermined conditions, and automatically modifies, the control parameters which are applied to the basic control module based on the basic control parameters stored in the characteristic storage mechanism and the input data.

Real time customization of characteristics of a control unit is conducted, and a control unit can become adaptive to an individual user. The input-output relationship of the control module is regulated by pre-selected control parameters. Performance of a device manipulated by a user is controlled essentially by at least one control module having an input-output relationship regulated by control parameters. Optimization of overall characteristics of the performance can be conducted by (a) preselecting values of the control parameters and activating the device; (b) changing values of the control parameters within predetermined ranges under predetermined coding rules; (c) evaluating the performance of the device based on signals indicative of the performance; (d) displaying to the user the evaluation outcome in the form of intuitively recognizable symbols which are preselected to represent various evaluation outcomes; and (e) selecting values of the control parameters based on the selected symbol(s) by the user. By repeating steps (b) through (e) while operating the device, the at least one control module is optimized.

Method and apparatus for optimizing overall characteristics of device

Optimization control of a control system by improving evolution efficiency while retaining the advantages of genetic optimization is described. An optimizer for evolving control parameters affecting the characteristics of a control system uses actual user fitness evaluations of various control parameters or control parameters arranged as chromosomes. Parameters or chromosomes for a next generation are pre-processed using an evaluation model that estimates the fitness of new chromosomes before the chromosomes are presented to the user. Chromosomes that have a low estimated fitness value are modified or deleted, thereby reducing the number of low-quality chromosomes evaluated by the user.

Method and device for controlling optimization of a control subject

In an output controlling method for controlling output of a driving power source or motor installed in a vehicle, the relationship between a primary output-controller, which is manipulated by the user, and a secondary output-controller, which directly operates the motor, is regulated by control parameter subjected to evolution by using evolutionary computing based on at least one of the following: the user's characteristics, driving conditions, environmental changes, and deterioration of the drive power source with time. The evolution is conducted on-line or on a real-time basis. The primary output-controller includes an acceleration pedal or grip, and the secondary output-controller includes a throttle valve for an internal combustion engine or a running current controller for an electric motor.

An integrated control system for a machine such as an engine. The machine is composed of plurality of components such as a throttle valve and a fuel injector. The control system has a plurality of control modules for controlling the respective components and finally controlling the machine through the control of the components. Each control module is associated with at least one parameter for controlling each component. The parameter is evolved under genetic algorithm so as to be adapted to at least one of a predetermined characteristic that is a target of the machine, a characteristic of a user who uses the machine, a using condition and an environmental condition of the machine.

The machine is &ldquo;trained&rdquo; to suit the characteristics of the user and/or the using conditions.
