The present invention relates to an optical imaging device capable of responding to a writing long-wave radiation (w) emitted by any object or scene. Said device is configured to operate in reflection mode or in transmission mode and comprises a reading light unit (), writing light unit (), resonant optically-addressed spatial light modulator (ROASLM) () with an optically-responsive resonant structure (ORRS) () and a detector (), wherein said (ORRS) () comprises: a photosensitive layer () deposited on a transparent substrate for absorbing the writing radiation (w) in a form of the long-wave image of the object or scene () and transforming said image into the stimulating signal across the ORRS (), optical layers () for inducing resonance effect to the stimulating signal formed in the ORRS (), optional alignment layers () for aligning liquid crystal molecules, and the conversion layer () for converting the resonant long-wave image of the object or scene () into a visible-range image.

Optical device capable of responding to a writing long-wave radiation

The present invention describes a liquid crystal composite tunable device for fast polarisation-independent modulation of an incident light beam comprising: (a) two supporting and functional panels, at least one of them coated with a transparent conductive electrode layer and with optionally at least one additional layer selected from an alignment layer, antireflective coating layer, thermochromic or electrochromic layer, photoconductive or photosensitive layer, and (b) a composite structure sandwiched between said two panels and made of a liquid crystal and porous microparticles infiltrated with said liquid crystal. The porous microparticles have an average refractive index approximately equals to one of the liquid crystal principal refractive indices, matching that of the liquid crystal at one orientational state (for example, parallel n), and exhibiting large mismatch at another orientational state (for example, perpendicular n). This refractive index mismatch between said microparticles and said liquid crystal is tuned by applying an external electric or magnetic field, thermally or optically.

Spectral and phase modulation tunable birefringence devices

The invention relates to the field of surface waves based optical devices particularly tuneable optical filter, optical biosensors and spatial light modulators. An optical sensor and tuneable filter is disclosed based on high contrast periodic structures deposited on a substrate and using a compact reading method for low detection limit using a one dimensionally diverging quasi-monochromatic beam and a camera.

Resonant periodic structures and methods of using them as filters and sensors

A system is described that combines spectropolarimetry with scatterometry. The system uses an annular mirror and liquid crystal devices to control the angle of the incident light cone, the polarization and wavelength, an imaging setup and one or more video cameras so that spectroscopic-polarimetric-scatterometric images can be grabbed rapidly. The system is also designed to incorporate additional imaging modes such as interference, phase contrast, fluorescence and Raman spectropolarimetric imaging.

Multi-spectral polarimetric variable optical device and imager

The invention is a system and method that enable obtaining ultra-high resolution interference, phase and OCT images at high speed. The system uses neither mechanical moving elements nor any optical/electro optical modulating means for obtaining the OCT images. Two OCT operating modes are available: for ultra-high resolution the system allows either spatial coherence TD-FF-OCT or temporal coherence TD-FF-OCT imaging, whereas for high resolution and ultra-high speed the system allows FD-FF-OCT imaging with full range imaging. In the TD mode, the OCT enface images are obtained in real time. In the FD mode, the 2D complex signal is reconstructed in real time. In both cases the method has the advantage of very high speed imaging with great immunity to noise.

Real time dual mode full-field optical coherence microscopy with full range imaging

A system is described that combines spectropolarimetry with scatterometry. The system uses an annular mirror and liquid crystal devices to control the angle of the incident light cone, the polarization and wavelength, an imaging setup and one or more video cameras so that spectroseopic-polarimetric-scatterometric images can be grabbed rapidly. The system is also designed to incorporate additional imaging modes such as interference, phase contrast, fluorescence and Raman spectropolarimetric imaging.

The invention is a tunable achromatic wave plate comprised of two or more retarders made of electrooptic or magnetooptic materials arranged at different orientations with respect to each other and at least one voltage source configured to tune the retardation dispersion of each of the retarders by applying an external electric or magnetic field to each retarder separately. Also described are examples of optical systems in which the invention can be employed.

Tunable achromatic waveplates

The invention is an optical system for up-conversion of SWIR images into visible images. The optical system of the invention comprises a liquid crystal optically addressed spatial light modulator (LC-OASLM), which acts as an optical valve, and two optionally GRADIUM lenses to reduce the size and complexity of the optical setup. In embodiments of the invention, the photosensitive layer is replaced by a photodiode or array of photodiodes and the liquid crystal layer is replaced by an array (film) of organic light emitting diodes which emit light at the VIS by collecting SWIR light or by a fluorescence layer with sensitivity in the SWIR range.

SWIR to visible up-conversion optical system

The invention is a SPR sensor that comprises a multi-layered plasmonic structure on a substrate for sensing. The SPR sensor has an enhanced figure of merit and lower limit of detection (system noise divided by the sensitivity) by at least two orders of magnitude than prior art SPR sensors. The plasmonic structure of the invention comprises a Nanostructured Porous Metal Layer (NPML) and at least one of: (a) buried dielectric layer under the nano-porous metal layer; (b) a nano-dimensional high index layer on top of the metal layer; and (c) a molecular layer for bio-functionalization adjacent to an analyte layer. The invention also encompasses many embodiments of measuring systems that comprise the SPR sensors of the invention with improved signal to noise ratio.

Optical sensor based with multilayered plasmonic structure comprising a nanoporous metallic layer

A system microscopy system and method that enable obtaining high resolution 3D images in a single shot are presented. The system is an ultra-high speed, real time multi wavelength phase shift interference microscopy system that uses three synchronized color CCD cameras. Each CCD is equipped with a precision achromatic phase mask which in turn allows obtaining &#x3c0;/2 phase shifted signals in three different wavelengths simultaneously.

The invention is a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor to determine the presence and quantity of biological or chemical entities in an analyte. The sensor comprises a metal periodic structure deposited as a thin layer of a noble metal, comprising a one dimensional array of nanoslits or a two dimensional array of nanoholes on a transparent dielectric substrate, a nm-thick layer of transparent dielectric protection layer on top of the metal periodic structure and a functionalization layer, which acts as a binding layer to biological or biochemical entities in an analyte that is in contact with the functionaliztion layer.

Optical sensor with enhanced sensitivity

The invention is a system and method for obtaining interference and optical coherence tomography images from an object. The system comprises a wideband source, an optical mask for extending the depth of field, a a liquid crystal tunable filter and a phase modulator all of which are uniquely integrated in a Linnik interferometer microscope. The system has several imaging modes: in the time domain mode the device may operate either with wideband illumination or with quasi monochromatic illumination. The monochromatic illumination can be varied in wavelength along a wide spectral region thus allowing true spectroscopic imaging in high resolution and with high speed. Due to the liquid crystal tunable filter and the optical mask, the frequency domain mode is also accessible. The method of obtaining the optical coherence tomography images, both in the time and in the frequency domains, using the liquid crystal retarder is described in detail.

True-spectroscopic dual mode high resolution full-field optical coherence tomography using liquid crystal devices

An optical coherence tomography (OCT) imager comprising: a low coherence light source that provides light; a photosensor for imaging light; optics that directs a first portion of the light along a first optical path so that it is imaged on the photosensor and a second portion of the light along a second optical path so that it is reflected by material in the target to the photosensor where it is imaged to interfere with light from the first portion to form an interference pattern; and a mask through which light from at least one of the first and second portions of light passes that generates a relative phase perturbation between portions of light that passes through it.

High resolution extended depth of field optical coherence tomography

Novel, polarization-insensitive, birefringent, broadband tunable filter arrangements that allow high throughput, based on a combination of tunable birefringent layers or polarization dependent filters, in combination with one or more of the following components (i) thin film achromatic quarter waveplates based on the form birefringence of dielectric subwavelength grating structures, (ii) nano wire-grid polarizers made of metallic wire grids; (iii) omnidirectional dielectric mirrors, (iv) polarization conversion mirrors, (v) reflective polarized beam splitters for circularly polarized light, (vi) metallic subwavelength gratings with lines having Gaussian profile, and (vii) Faraday mirror. All of these components may be implemented in thin film form on one or more substrates, such that a compact and cost effective filter can be produced. The birefringent layers can be any birefringent or magneto-optic layer but especially liquid crystals. The use of novel polarization conversion disposition of the components of the filter results in a filter having high throughput.
