A method and apparatus for detection of a failure of a rectifier connected to a passive harmonic filter with a tuned circuit reactor, or of the filter itself, using low cost voltage sensing, modeling of reactor resistance and saturable inductance, and a mathematical integration. The harmonic spectrum of the rectifier current is used to determine an estimate of the rectifier impedance. A template of expected rectifier current is calculated, and compared against a rectifier current calculated on the basis of sensed voltages, to generate a difference signal. The difference signal is compared against a predetermined fault threshold to determine if an error has occurred. The apparatus includes a DSP obtaining the voltages of the source and load, and the tuned circuit reactor voltage, and configured to compare the currents calculated from the actual voltages with the currents in the template, and to thereby determine whether to annunciate a fault.

Passive harmonic filter power quality monitor and communications device

A Z source network includes positive and negative input terminals and a first snubber circuit connected across the positive and negative input terminals. The first snubber circuit is configured to suppress voltage transients across the positive and negative input terminals. The Z source network also includes positive and negative output terminals and a second snubber circuit connected across the positive and negative output terminals. The second snubber circuit is configured to suppress voltage transients across the positive and negative output terminals.

An electrical network configured to suppress voltage transients includes a capacitor and an electrical impedance in parallel with a diode. The capacitor is in series with the parallel connected diode and electrical impedance. The electrical network is configured to suppress voltage transients occurring across the series combination of the capacitor and the parallel connected diode and electrical impedance.

Methods and systems of impedance source semiconductor device protection

A parallel filter arrangement with at least two filters supplying current in line side sensing configuration and a number of sensors for measuring current. The sensors are used to determine the amount of current being supplied by the filters and the amount of current being supplied by a source. The filters adjust their supplied current in order to reduce or eliminate the amount of reactive or harmonic current being supplied by a source.

Paralleling of active filters with independent controls

An electrical network configured to suppress voltage transients is disclosed. The network includes a capacitor and an electrical impedance in parallel with a diode. The capacitor is in series with the parallel connected diode and electrical impedance, and the electrical network is configured to suppress voltage transients occurring across the series combination of the capacitor and the parallel connected diode and electrical impedance.

A passive filter for connection between an AC source and a load, in either three-phases or in a single-phase arrangement. The filter includes, for each phase, a trap circuit having an inductor in series with a capacitor, the trap circuit having at least two terminals. A line reactor is connected between the AC source and the load, the line reactor having at least an input terminal, an output terminal and a tap terminal. A switch selectively connects at least one of the trap circuit terminals to a selected one of the line reactor terminals. The switch is capable of selecting which of the trap circuit terminals to connect to which of the line reactor terminals on the basis of a level of voltage distortion being experienced by the AC source, or on the basis of a calculated level of background voltage total harmonic distortion.

Reconfigurable passive filter

A motor drive for conditioning power to be delivered to a non-motor load includes a voltage feedback circuit that monitors a DC bus voltage and, based on changes in the DC bus voltage, adjusts a power conditioning scheme such that near steady-state load conditions are maintained in response to a transient load condition. The voltage feedback circuit has a voltage sensor that provides voltage feedback to a controller that determines what changes in power conditioning are needed in response to a transient load condition that manifests itself in a change in DC bus voltage.

System and method of controlling power to a non-motor load

A loss of a power source for a bus is detected. Responsive to detecting the loss of the power source, a voltage is generated on the bus using an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). A generator is transitioned to a desired output state concurrent with generating the voltage on the bus using the UPS. The generator is coupled to the bus responsive to the generator attaining the desired output state. The UPS may be used to provide power to a load connected to the bus while the generator is in transition. For example, detecting the loss of the power source may be preceded by operating a converter of the UPS coupled to the bus as a rectifier and generating the voltage on the bus using the UPS may include operating the converter of the UPS as an inverter.

Power systems and methods using an uniterruptible power supply to transition to generator-powered operation

A power system includes a load bus configured to be connected to a power source, a generator and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The generator is operated as an induction generator to provide power to the load bus while providing reactive power to the load bus from the UPS. In some embodiments, prior to operating the generator as an induction generator, the generator is operated as an induction motor while the load bus is receiving power from the power source. Responsive to loss of the power source, the UPS may be used to maintain operation of the generator as an induction motor while the prime mover accelerates up to a speed sufficient to drive the generator as an induction generator.

Power systems and methods using an induction generator in cooperation with an uninterruptible power supply

A motor drive for conditioning power to be delivered to a load includes a current feedback circuit that monitors current being fed to a transformer connected between the motor drive and the load. Based on the total current input to the transformer, a controller adjusts the V/Hz profile along which the motor drive operates. In this regard, the motor drive operates according to a V/Hz profile during start-up that prevents transformer saturation.

System and method of controlling the start-up of an adjustable speed motor drive based sinusoidal output power conditioner

A back-pack power supply module is for a circuit interrupter including an elongated line conductor. The back-pack power supply module includes a housing having an opening therethrough. The opening receives the elongated line conductor, which passes through the opening. A power supply circuit is housed by the housing and is adapted to input a line voltage from the elongated line conductor and output direct current voltages. A capacitive divider circuit includes two capacitors electrically connected in series between a first terminal and an output of the capacitive divider circuit. One of these two capacitors receives the line voltage. The two capacitors are embedded in insulation within one portion of the housing. Another capacitor is electrically connected between a second terminal and the capacitive divider circuit output. The other capacitor is disposed in another portion of the housing opposite the opening.
