A technique for transaction recovery by one transaction manager of another transaction manager's transactions in which each transaction manager is adapted to manage two phase commit transactional operations on transactional resources and to record commit or rollback decisions in a transaction recovery log. The recovery transaction manager detects apparent unavailability of the another transaction manager for transaction processing and initiates a transaction recovery process for the another transaction manager's transactions. This process also determines whether any of the transactions of the another transaction manager have all respective resources prepared to commit without there yet being a pending commit decision record in the another transaction manager's recovery log. If so, the recovery transaction manager writes a rollback record indicating an intention to roll back the identified transaction, in the another transaction manager's recovery log provided no commit decision record has been recorded.

Transaction recovery in a transaction processing computer system employing multiple transaction managers

Applications retrieve physical messages from one of either a co-located, passive messaging engine within the same datacenter as the application, or a nearest passive messaging engine from a different datacenter instead of from the active messaging engine. In that way, the active messaging engine does not deliver the physical message directly from its local storage.

Message retrieval in a distributed computing network

A process, a computer program product, and a computer system for redelivering a subset of messages in a packet to a receiver application are provided. The present invention enables the partially received packet to be delivered to the application layer (LLM) and allow LLM to decide whether it has to request for full packet retransmission or partial retransmission of the packet. The present invention allows the LLM of the receiver to generate a PNACK (partial negative-acknowledgement) based on the subset of the messages consumed from within the partial packet. The present invention allows the LLM of the transmitter to process the PNACK, to regenerate a new packet from the original packet to contain only a subset of the messages, and to send this new packet to the receiver who has generated the PNACK.

Method for redelivering a subset of messages in a packet to a receiver application

Resource reservation request information originated by a client application during a first phase of a distributed multi-phase transaction is received at a processor. The resource reservation request information specifies a first resource the client application intends to access during a first subsequent phase of the distributed multi-phase transaction after the first phase of the distributed multi-phase transaction is completed. The requested first resource is reserved on behalf of the client application. A transaction weighted priority is assigned to the distributed multi-phase transaction of the client application based upon a stage of completion of the distributed multi-phase transaction.

A mechanism is provided for deciding whether to install a first application within one of a plurality of candidate environments. An environment comprising one or more other applications. The first application and a candidate environment are analyzed to determine whether there is the potential for the first application to interact in an unintended manner with an application in the candidate environment. If there is no such potential, then the environment is identified as a suitable environment into which to install the first application. An unintended interaction is when a rule would be broken by an interaction between the first application and an application in the candidate environment.

Deciding whether to install a first application within one of a plurality of candidate environments

An indication is provided to a transaction participant as part of a message originating from a transaction coordinator. The message indicates that the transaction coordinator supports a heuristic response. The transaction coordinator coordinates commitment of transactions as requested by an application in response to a determination by the transaction participant of a heuristic outcome. Heuristic outcomes include situations where transaction participants determine they are unable to honor transactional prior prepared commitments made to the transaction coordinator during first prepare phases of two-phase commits associated with the transactions. The heuristic response is received from the transaction participant in association with a transaction coordinated by the transaction coordinator and indicates that the transaction participant is unable to honor a transactional prior prepared commitment made by the transaction participant during a first prepare phase of a two-phase commit associated with the transaction coordinated by the transaction coordinator as requested by the application.

Heuristics processing

A messaging system comprises a message source, a message receiver and a message service. The message service is intermediate of the message source and message receiver, and a compensation component is established at the message source. A one way message is transmitted from the message source, where the one-way message is part of a plurality of one way messages of an overall business transaction. The message is received at the message service and is transmitted to the message receiver, which processes the received message. The message receiver transmits a communication indicating success or failure of the processing of the message. The system causes compensation logic defined by a compensation component to execute responsive to receiving an indication of a failure of part of the overall business transaction despite the communication from the message receiver indicated that processing of the particular one way message succeeded.

Handling of messages in a message system

The invention provides a mechanism for a transaction coordinator to indicate to a transaction participant that it supports a heuristic outcome, where a course of action has occurred which means that the transaction participant is unable to honor a transactional prior commitment to the transaction coordinator. The mechanism is such that a transaction participant that is incapable of communicating a heuristic outcome may ignore any such indication. A transaction participant may be incapable because it does not understand the concept of a heuristic outcome at all or because it does not have the ability to inform the transaction coordinator that a heuristic outcome has occurred.

A method, apparatus and computer program are disclosed for modifying an application comprising a plurality of modules. A user is presented with a list of modules. The user is able to specify input regarding any permitted version modifications for the modules listed. It is then determined whether the requested modifications are possible with one or more failure messages being output when any of the requested modifications are not possible. At least one of the failure messages is used to enable modification of the initial input provided by the user. In one embodiment, information is provided to the user based on one or more failure messages in order to enable the user to modify their choices. In another embodiment, the initial input is automatically modified. A permitted version modification may be, for example, a version upgrade, a version downgrade, and an indication that there is no preference.

Modifying a multi-module application

A method of handling a message in a messaging system is provided. The messaging system comprises a message source, a message receiver and a message service. The message service is intermediate of the message source and message receiver, wherein a compensation component is established at the message source. The method comprises the steps of, transmitting a one way message, as part of a business transaction, from the message source, the transaction comprising a plurality of one way messages, receiving the message at the message service, transmitting the message from the messaging service, receiving the message at the message receiver, processing the message at the message receiver, transmitting a communication from the message receiver, the communication indicating success or failure of the processing of the message, receiving the communication at the messaging service, and responsive to receiving an indication of a failure of part of the transaction when the communication indicated that processing of the one way message succeeded, causing compensation logic defined by the compensation component to execute.

Method of handling a message

The present invention provides a method, apparatus and computer program product which enables a target service to provide operations which behave, on a per operation basis, in a way appropriate to the type of client that requested the operation to be performed. As a result the target service can provide operations which behave differently for different clients. Further the client can obtain details of the behavior characteristics of the operations, according to its type, at runtime and act appropriately in the event of the request being timed out or resulting in a communication failure. For example, the client middleware can take action to re-issue a timed out request if the behavior characteristic for that operation indicates that multiple invocations of the operation will yield the same result.
