A method of sealing a peelable lid () to a flange () provided within a metal can body () which involves inserting an induction coil () into the can body to primarily heat the sealing surface () of the flange, while keeping the exterior wall of the can relatively cool to avoid tin reflow and decoration degradation of the exterior wall. The induction coil is subsequently removed from the can body and a peelable lid applied to the flange, whereby residual heat in the flange aids the sealing of the lid to the flange, e.g. by allowing activation of a bonding material.

Method for sealing a metal cans with peelable lids and device therefor

A can for packaging food, comprising a metal can body and a diaphragm lid () formed of lidding material which comprises a multilayer structure with at least an aluminum layer of from 6 to 90 microns thickness and a bond layer for fixing the lid () directly to the can body. One method for forming the can forms the lidding material by using an outwardly extending curl () at one end of the metal can body as the draw die. Lidding material which is carried by the body maker punch is drawn around the curl of the can body draw die so as to form the lidding material into a cup shape.

Packaging can and method and apparatus for its manufacture

A metal closure is described, in the form of a foil lid () bonded to a metal annular component (such as a container body or separate intermediate ring). The foil lid () and annular component are made of dissimilar metals, with the closure adapted to prevent bimetallic corrosion at the interface between the dissimilar metals of the foil lid and the annular component. The closure is adapted such that the lid comprises a peripheral wall which is upstanding from the annular component such that a gap is maintained between the annular component and an exposed metal peripheral edge of the lid. Further aspects of the invention include: i. a method for making such a metal closure; and ii. an apparatus for making such a metal closure.

Bimetallic corrosion mitigation

This invention relates to a self-heating or self-cooling container (), which uses an exothermic or endothermic re-action to provide or remove heat from the contents of the container. The chemical reaction includes a fluid consistuent (either as a reagent or solvent), held in a reservoir (), which is added to another reagent in the reaction chamber () to initiate the reaction. The container () according to the invention proposes a means () to control the volume of this fluid constituent added to the reaction chamber () depending on the ambient temperature of the container.

Continuous extrusion of metals

A continuous extrusion machine in which feedstock in particulate or comminuted form is admitted to a peripheral groove formed in a rotating wheel member, is enclosed in that groove by a cooperating shoe member, is frictionally dragged along the arcuate passageway formed by said groove and a projecting portion of said shoe member towards an abutment member carried by said shoe member, and is continuously extruded as a metal product through a die orifice disposed at the downstream end of that passageway. A cooling device is provided downstream of the abutment member. The passageway comprises (a) a primary zone extending downstream from the inlet end of the passageway, in which primary zone the particulate or comminuted feedstock is compacted, by rotation of said wheel member, to progressively eliminate voids in the advancing feedstock and so form an agglomerated mass of feedstock metal, and (b) an adjoining, substantially shorter, secondary zone disposed downstream of the primary zone and extending at least to the die orifice, in which secondary zone said mass of metal is progressively compressed, by rotation of the wheel member, to a desired extrusion pressure sufficient to extrude said mass of metal though the die orifice. The radial depth of the passageway is substantially unchanging in the primary zone, and decreases gradually in the secondary zone in the direction of rotation of the wheel member at a relatively high rate and in such manner as to produce in that zone adjacent the die orifice a metal flow pattern more closely resembling that which is achievable with feedstock in solid form.

A continuous extrusion product issuing from a continuous extrusion apparatus is threaded through a treatment die (to change its cross-section) and is continuously drawn therethrough by a tensioning device controlled by a system which (a) senses the temperature of the product as it leaves the extrusion apparatus, (b) converts (in a function generator) a temperature signal so produced into a tension reference signal, (c) compares a tension feedback signal (derived from a sensor adjacent the extrusion apparatus) with that tension reference signal, and (d) controls the tensioning device in accordance with the difference of the tension reference and feedback signals so as to prevent the sensed tension in the product (extending between the extrusion apparatus and the treatment die) from exceeding a safe value which is less than the yield stress tension of that product at the sensed temperature.

In a continuous extrusion machine in which feedstock is admitted to a peripheral groove in a rotating wheel, is enclosed in that groove by a cooperating shoe, is frictionally dragged along an arcuate passageway formed by said groove and a projecting portion of said shoe towards an abutment carried by said shoe, and is continuously extruded as a metal product through a die, is flash extruded through clearance gaps between cooperating wheel and shoe surfaces, is intercepted and broken off periodically in short lengths by teeth which project radially or transversely from the wheel, the arcuate passageway has a radial depth which progressively decreases in the direction of wheel rotation in a zone extending upstream from the abutment.

A match splint is formed from a rigid core member, which can be substantially non-porous, e.g. of glass, metal or plastic, or porous, e.g. of wood or wood substitute, with an absorbent layer of finely divided particles or fibres adhering to the core adjacent the head of the match, the absorbent layer acting as the reservoir to hold the fuel, e.g. paraffin wax, as an impregnant therein.

Match splints and matches made therewith

A method for the manufacture of matches which comprises applying to a match splint, before the formation thereon of the match head, a surface coating of an aqueous dispersion comprising (i) a low melting point solid fuel e.g. paraffin wax, (ii) a finely divided particulate or fibrous filler and (iii) either a water-immiscible volatile solvent for the fuel or a water-soluble or water-dispersible adhesive, or a mixture of the two; and thereafter drying the coated splint to deposit thereon adjacent the end thereof, on which the head is to be formed, a surface coating comprising a mixture of said fuel and said filler, and, if present, said adhesive.
