A communications network for a metropolitan area is disclosed. The network is comprised of three basic types of nodes: an access multiplexer, a photonic switch, and a core node. The access multiplexer provides multiplexing of data packets from end-users onto at least one sparse wavelength division multiplexed (SWDM) wavelength. The SWDM wavelengths are carried over fiber cable to the photonic switches, which consolidate these wavelengths into dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) wavelengths for transmission to the core node. The core nodes include a photonic switch (PSX) and a service-aware terabit router core for routing packets within the metropolitan area via the network or out to a long haul network. The photonic switches and core nodes are capable of switching at the wavelength, group of wavelength, and fiber levels.

For assigning bandwidth in a constrained topology ethernet network there is presented a function that creates and manages a ledger of bandwidth requests over the ethernet network. The function, a bandwidth manager, tracks the total bandwidth of each link in the network and the bandwidth that has been reserved on each link. When traffic is granted reserved bandwidth the bandwidth manager notes this allocation in the ledger. The header of the traffic packets indicates that the traffic is of highest priority when the traffic has been given reserved bandwidth. In this manner the bandwidth manager can track and limit the amount of high priority traffic on the network.

Bandwidth allocation in ethernet networks

A virtual private network enables private communications between two or more private networks over a shared MPLS network. The virtual private network disclosed, includes multiple routers connected to the shared MPLS network and configured to dynamically distribute VPN information across the shared MPLS network. The VPN information distributed by a router includes a VPN identifier assigned to that router, which identifies a VPN with which that router is associated. The router includes a first table which stores a map of the label switched paths from the router in question to all other routers connected to the shared MPLS network. The router also includes a second table which stores a map of label switched paths from the router in question to all other routers connected to the shared MPLS network which share a common VPN identifier.
