Disclosed herein is a method of converting a carbon material to graphene, the method comprising the step of subjecting an amorphous carbon material pellet submerged in a molten inorganic material that comprises an alkaline earth halide to an electrochemical reaction in an inert atmosphere for a period of time, wherein the amorphous carbon material pellet is converted to a graphene pellet comprising graphene flakes by said reaction.

Electrochemical conversion of a carbon material to graphene

Methods for the production in an electrochemical cell of metal oxide deposited graphene and/or graphite nanoplatelet structures having a thickness of less than 100 nm, in a cell having a positive electrode which is graphitic and an electrolyte comprising an intercalating anion and a metal cation, wherein the metal is selected from ruthenium, manganese, iridium, tin, and silver. The methods comprising the step of passing a current through the cell to intercalate anions into the graphitic positive electrode so as to exfoliate the graphitic positive electrode and such that the metal ion undergoes electrodeposition in the form of the corresponding metal oxide to produce the metal oxide deposited graphene and/or graphite nanoplatelet structures.

Production of graphene materials

The present invention relates to novel nanocomposite materials, methods of making nanocomposites and uses of nanocomposite materials. In particular, the invention relates to composite materials which contain two-dimensional materials (e.g. graphene) in multi-layer form i.e. in a form which has a number of atomic layers. The properties of a composite material containing two-dimensional material is in multi-layer from are shown to be superior to those which contain the two-dimensional material in monolayer form.

Graphene composites

A method for the production of 1T-transition metal dichalcogenide few-layer nanosheets and/or monolayer nanosheets comprising electrochemical intercalation of lithium ions into a negative electrode comprising a bulk 2H-transition metal dichalcogenide to provide an intercalated electrode, and an exfoliation step comprising contacting the intercalated electrode with a protic solvent to produce 1T-transition metal dichalcogenide few-layer nanosheets and/or monolayer nanosheets. An electrochemical capacitor comprising a composite electrode comprising 1T-MoSnanosheets and graphene, and a method of producing a composite electrode for use in an electrochemical capacitor.

Composite materials with thermoelectric properties and devices made from such materials are described. The thermoelectric composite material may comprise a metal oxide material and graphene or modified graphene. It has been found that the addition of graphene or modified graphene to thermoelectric metal oxide materials increases ZT. It has further been found that the ZT of the metal oxide becomes effective over a broader temperature range and at lower temperatures.

Production of graphene

The present invention provides a method for the production in an electrochemical cell of one or more of graphene, graphite nanoplatelet structures having a thickness of less than 100 nm, and graphane, wherein the cell comprises: (a) a negative electrode which is graphitic; (b) a positive electrode which may be graphitic or another material; and (c) an electrolyte selected from (i) an ionic liquid; (ii) a deep eutectic solvent; and (iii) a solid ionic conductor, optionally further comprising (iv) one or more ionic species, wherein the amount of (i), (ii) or (iii) and (iv) is greater than 50 wt % based on the total weight of the electrolyte; and wherein the electrolyte includes a mixture of different cations; and wherein the method comprises the step of passing a current through the cell to intercalate ions into the graphitic negative electrode so as to exfoliate the graphitic negative electrode.

Production of graphene and graphane

A method for the production of graphene oxide and/or graphite oxide nanoplatelet structures having a thickness of less than 100 nm in an electrochemical cell, the cell comprising: (a) a positive electrode that is graphitic; (b) a negative electrode that may be graphitic or another material; (c) an electrolyte including: (i) organic anions in a solvent; (ii) non-oxidant polyatomic anions in a solution; and/or (ii) polyatomic anions in a solvent wherein the electrolyte has a hydrogen ion concentration of &#x3c;1&#xd7;10mol dm; wherein the method comprises the step of passing a current through the cell to intercalate the anions into the graphitic positive electrode so as to exfoliate the graphitic positive electrode.

A method of producing graphene by the electrochemical insertion of alkylammonium cations in a solvent into graphite is disclosed.

A method for the production of graphene and graphite nanoplatelet structures having a thickness of less than 100 nm in an electrochemical cell, wherein the cell comprises: (a) a negative electrode which is graphitic; (b) a positive electrode which may be graphitic or another material; and (c) an electrolyte which is ions in a solvent where the cations are organic ions and metal ions; and wherein the method comprises the step of passing a current through the cell.
