An engine includes a plurality of combustion cylinders configured to burn a fuel to power the engine, and a plurality of fuel injectors. Each of the fuel injectors is arranged to distribute fuel delivered from a fuel tank to one of the plurality of combustion cylinders. The engine also includes a controller programmed to adjust a fuel trim signal gain based on sensing exhaust flow downstream of the combustion cylinders. The controller is also programmed to monitor a cumulative misfire count for each of the plurality of combustion cylinders. The controller is further programmed to issue a prognosis message identifying a state of health of at least one of the plurality of fuel injectors in response to a fuel trim signal gain exceeding an adjustment threshold and a cumulative misfire count greater than a misfire threshold.

Systems and methods for performing prognosis of fuel delivery

A torque request module determines a torque request for an engine based on a driver input. A cylinder control module determines a target fraction of a total number of cylinders of the engine to be activated based on the torque request. An air fuel imbalance (AFIM) module selectively commands that the cylinder control module set the target fraction based on a predetermined fraction of the total number of cylinders of the engine to be activated. The cylinder control module further: sets the target fraction based on the predetermined fraction in response to the command; and activates and deactivates opening of intake and exhaust valves of the cylinders of the engine based on the target fraction. The AFIM module further, while the target firing fraction is set based on the predetermined fraction, selectively diagnoses the presence of an AFIM fault based on samples of a signal from an oxygen sensor.

Control systems and methods for air fuel imbalance and cylinder deactivation

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a fault command module, a fuel control module, and a fault detection module. The fault command module selectively generates a command to induce a fuel system fault based on a user input. The fuel control module automatically adjusts a fuel correction factor to a target value outside of a first predetermined range in response to the command to induce a fuel system fault. The fuel control module actuates a fuel injector associated with a cylinder of an engine based on the fuel correction factor. The fault detection module detects a fuel system fault when the fuel correction factor is outside of the first predetermined range.

System and method for inducing a fuel system fault

A fault diagnostic system of a vehicle includes an error module, a proportional integral (PI) module, and a fault module. The error module determines an error based on a difference between a sample of a signal generated by an exhaust gas oxygen sensor and a target value of the sample. The PI module determines a proportional correction based on the error, determines an integral correction based on the error, and determines a fueling correction based on the proportional and integral corrections. The fault module selectively diagnoses a fault based on the integral correction and the fueling correction.

Fuel control diagnostic systems and methods

Fueling to one cylinder of an engine is selectively adjusted based on a correction associated with the cylinder. An instability module increments a counter value when the correction is equal to one of a first predetermined value and a second predetermined value and was previously equal to the other one of the first and second predetermined values. The instability module selectively generates a first indicator based on the counter value. A variance of imbalance values can be determined based on samples of an exhaust gas oxygen signal. Two variances are determined: one variance with adjustment based on the correction, one without adjustment based on the correction. A variance checking module selectively generates a second indicator based on the first and second variances. A re-synchronization module re-synchronizes the imbalance values with the cylinders, respectively, in response to generation of the first indicator and/or the second indicator.

Imbalance re-synchronization control systems and methods

A method and control module for determining a sensor error includes a time-based diagnostic module generating a time-based diagnostic for a sensor and an event-based diagnostic module generating an event-based diagnostic for the sensor. A synchronizing module synchronizes the time-based diagnostic and the event-based diagnostic to obtain a diagnostic result. A fault indicator module generates a fault signal in response to the diagnostic result.

Control system and method for sensor signal out of range detection

An air/fuel imbalance (AFIM) diagnostic system comprises a first module, an imbalance determination module, and an imbalance diagnostic module. The first module outputs imbalance data samples based on an oxygen signal provided by an oxygen sensor measuring oxygen in exhaust expelled from cylinders of a cylinder bank. The imbalance determination module determines an AFIM value based on the imbalance data samples. The imbalance diagnostic module selectively diagnoses an AFIM in the cylinder bank based on the AFIM value.

A diagnostic system comprises a monitoring module and a diagnostic module. The monitoring module receives a first rail pressure measured by a high side rail pressure sensor during engine cranking at a location where fuel is pressurized by a high pressure fuel pump. The diagnostic module selectively diagnoses a fault in at least one of the high pressure fuel pump and the high side rail pressure sensor when the first rail pressure is less than a predetermined pressure and rail pressures received during a predetermined period after the first rail pressure is received are less than the predetermined pressure.

A system includes a fuel detection module, a misfire detection module, and a fuel control module. The fuel detection module detects when a fuel supplied to an engine having C cylinders has a high drivability index (HIDI), where C is an integer greater than 1. The misfire detection module detects whether M of the C cylinders misfire when the fuel has the HIDI, where M is an integer, and 1&#x2266;M&#x3c;C. The fuel control module injects a first amount of the fuel into the M of the C cylinders when M is less than or equal to D, where D is an integer less than C, and where the first amount is greater than a first predetermined amount.

An oxygen storage capacity (OSC) monitoring system for a vehicle having a catalytic converter includes an inlet oxygen sensor that generates an inlet sensor signal (ISS) based on an oxygen content of exhaust flowing into the catalytic converter. A control module receives the ISS, increases a closed loop fuel control gain during a first period and determines a fuel control factor based on the ISS during the first period. The control module determines an OSC when an average value of the fuel control factor is greater than a first value and is less than a second value during the first period.

A system for estimating fuel concentration comprises an ethanol estimating module that generates an ethanol estimate based on baseline closed loop corrections (CLC). A fuel system module controls fuel to an engine and generates a fuel system error. The ethanol estimating module selectively adjusts the baseline CLC and the ethanol estimate based on the fuel system error. A method of estimating composition of fuel in the fuel tank of a vehicle. A refuel event is detected. Fuel consumption is monitored during a plurality of stages after the refuel event. A plurality of fuel trim shift values are determined relative to the stages. The fuel trim shift values are used to estimate a fuel composition change. This method eliminates a need for a hardware fuel composition sensor and also provides dynamic filtering of fuel trim values.
