In one example, following a tip-in, turbine vane position may be adjusted as a function of a maximum permissible exhaust pressure upstream of a turbocharger turbine. The maximum permissible exhaust pressure may be determined as a function of a HP EGR valve position at the time of the tip-in.

An engine controller system for a direct injection spark ignited internal combustion engine that is capable of operating a stratified mode where fuel is injected during a compression stroke of the engine and a homogeneous mode where fuels is injected during an intake stroke of the engine. An apparatus and method are provided for detecting knock in a spark ignition internal combustion engine. The engine comprises at least one cylinder with a spark plug, engine condition sensors for sensing engine speed, engine angle and engine noise, and an engine management system (EMS) that receives signals from the sensors to determine engine angle and engine noise. The EMS has a nonvolatile memory, a spark plug driver, and a processor. The processor is arranged to control the spark driver to generate an ignition spark at a desired spark angle according to signals from at least some of the sensors, and determine over a first range of engine angles a background engine noise, and over a second range of engine angles an engine knock noise. The processor then retards (or advances) the spark angle if the level of knock noise relative to background noise exceeds (or falls below) a predetermined level. The first range of angles is selected by the processor according to one or more signals including the engine speed signal, from a plurality of engine angle ranges stored in the nonvolatile memory.

The present invention relates to verifying the cycle of a fuel injection internal combustion engine during running of the engine. The engine comprises a number of cylinders with pistons linked to a crankshaft, an exhaust conduit, one or more engine operating condition sensors including an exhaust gas sensor in an exhaust conduit, and an engine management system that includes timer means and fueling means for controlling the air/fuel ratio for at least one cylinder, the engine management system being arranged to receive from said sensors respective signals representative of engine operating conditions including exhaust gas condition, wherein the engine management system is capable of verifying the engine cycle by first altering the air/fuel ratio for one cylinder relative to the other cylinders, then timing a time delay until a signal is received from the exhaust gas sensor indicating a change in exhaust gas condition attributable to exhaust from said one cylinder and then comparing this delay against an expected delay according to the engine operating conditions.
