A method () of protecting an internal combustion engine () of a vehicle () from damage by induction of liquid, the method () comprising: detecting () liquid in a gas induction system () to the engine (); and causing () valve control means () to at least perform one or both of the following: inhibiting gas intake into a combustion chamber () of the engine () during a gas intake stage () of a combustion cycle of the combustion chamber (); causing gas exhaust from a combustion chamber () of the engine () during a gas compression stage () of the combustion cycle of the combustion chamber (), wherein the valve control means () comprises at least one of a hydraulic circuit or an electromagnetic actuator for controlling, at least in part, the inhibiting gas intake into a combustion chamber () and/or at least one of a hydraulic circuit or an electromagnetic actuator for controlling, at least in part, the causing gas exhaust from a combustion chamber ().

Protecting an internal combustion engine of a vehicle from damage by induction of liquid

Various methods of control of combustion knock are disclosed in relation to a spark ignition, internal combustion engine having active tappets, whereby an inlet poppet valve can be moved independently of the usual operating cam. In one embodiment the invention provides for combustion knock to be controlled solely by variation of inlet air charge.

A method and system for fuel rail compensation in a returnless electronic fuel pump arrangement provides modification of fuel pulsewidth based on measured or inferred rail temperature. The present invention applies fuel pulsewidth control modifiers to enlarge the fuel pulse to increase the quantity of fuel being delivered to at least one fuel injector to offset any drop in fuel density and injector performance caused by fuel rail temperature. The present invention generates these modifiers separate from a vehicle's normal fuel delivery system adaptive control process, thereby eliminating any unnecessary adaptive processing and limiting of adaptive control range.
