A system and method for providing metadata interaction and visualization with task-related objects is described. A plurality of task-oriented items is defined. Each task-oriented item includes a storage component specifying metadata relating to at least one of planning, executing or completing a task. A visualization is provided to tie in the task-oriented items and associate modeling logic operating on at least one such task-oriented item. The visualization is displayed by highlighting at least one of interdependencies and conflicts between the metadata of the task-oriented items.

System and method for providing metadata interaction and visualization with task-related objects

Electronic messages with system-generated network addresses are transmitted to recipients to enable access to specific locations in the workflow system. The network addresses may be used only once, are generated using secure identifications and/or can be generated randomly. These secure identifications can be created by encoding a large number into the network address. The recipient of this network address may be required to himself to the workflow system, for example, as a means for minimizing security risks to the workflow system. The network addresses generated to specific locations within a workflow system are intended for specific recipients but may be shared by the recipients as circumstances require. Electronic mail can be transmitted with specific electronic mail addresses encoded in the electronic mail message. The specific email address can be encoded into a 'Reply-to' function. Alternatively, specific email addresses can be embedded into the message portion of the email message.

Systems and methods for integrating electronic mail and distributed networks into a workflow system

A system and method for identifying viable refactorings of program code using a comprehensive test suite is presented. Program code is maintained, including program statements written in accordance with a programming language and defining operations executed following transformation into machine code. A test suite associated with the program code is specified and includes one or more additional program operations to determine satisfactory generation of expected results during the operations execution. A plurality of refactorings are speculatively applied to the program code by evaluating one or more of the program statements against a set of refactoring rules and restructuring the program statements pursuant to at least one refactoring rule. The test suite is executed against the program code following each restructuring of the program statements and each refactoring that passes the test suite is determined.

System and method for identifying viable refactorings of program code using a comprehensive test suite

A method, system and article of manufacture for organizing and grouping objects is provided. By assigning property names and values to a plurality of related objects, they may be organized into a group and one object of the group may be displayed as the representative. Grouping objects and displaying a representative provides a single way to keep objects organized, keep 'reminders' of things to do or future events, all accessible through a central interface, and reduces the amount of display and storage space required to view and store all the objects. Additionally, the group of objects may be treated as a single document and the representative returned as a result of a search where one of the objects meets the search parameters.

An Internet-scale file sharing system includes a client-side file sharing application that allows file-sharing users to identify files to share and transmit metadata corresponding to those files to a metadata repository. A server-side application operating on the metadata repository tracks metadata received from associated file-sharing users, as well as metadata from other affiliated metadata repositories. Each metadata repository acts as a search engine for any querying users and can provide search results based on locally stored metadata alone. Each metadata repository may additionally choose to locally-store popular files from an associated file-sharing user so as to alleviate transmission burdens on that file-sharing user. Associated metadata repositories each periodically synchronize their stored metadata so that all metadata repositories may generate similar search results. In such manner, file-sharing queries need only be performed by the metadata repository receiving the query, and not by all associated metadata repositories.

Multi-tiered structure for file sharing based on social roles

A method for providing emergent and flexible workflow management to a user. The user communicates with other users, using a message-based system having embedded information management resources. The message-based system has a viewer. A message is generated at the message-based system. The message has metadata. The metadata of the message is updated using the embedded information management resources. The metadata include at least one of the group of a deadline, a reminder, a deferral and an obligation. The message is sent to the other users. Some of the metadata of the message are displayed on the viewer of the message-based system. Some of the metadata of the message are tracked at the message-based system.

Method and system for flexible workflow management

A system and method for automatically identifying compound refactorings of program code through quantitative metric analysis is presented. Program code is maintained, including program statements written in accordance with a programming language and defining operations executed following transformation into machine code. Compound refactorings are built. The program code is refactored by evaluating one or more of the program statements against a compound refactoring including a set of one or more individual refactorings. The application of the refactorings to the program statements is validated for each evaluated refactoring. A quantitative measure is analyzed against a threshold to reflect a relative difference between the program statements prior to and after application of the refactorings.

The systems and methods of this invention use an index and digital audio and/or video recordings of an activity to provide access to recently recorded material. For example, users initiate audio and/or video recordings. An index, e.g., an agenda, outlines the structure of the to be recorded event. The user selects an index item as an activity that corresponds to an index item is recorded. The recordings are then associated with the index. The user can then randomly access the recordings for playback, editing or further recording. The systems and methods of this invention additionally provide the means for correlating events and the corresponding index items with the recordings.

Systems and methods for using structured representations to index recordings of activity

A method, system, and article of manufacture for performing computation on an electronic message without the involvement of a user is provided. By including a command instruction in an electronic message which identifies an application provider for performing the computation and includes parameters and values to indicate what information is to be provided to the application provider, the message can be sent by a user and computation can be performed without the involvement of the user. The method, system, and article of manufacture is designed to intercept the message, control the computation, modify the message, and deliver it to the intended recipients.

Active electronic messaging system

A method for managing and tracking information items within a message-based system. The message-based system has a viewer which include a first, a second and a third viewing panes. A plurality of thrasks is generated. Each of the thrasks includes at least one information item having a set of metadata. A new information item is sorted into one of the thrasks in accordance with at least one criterion. Some of the thrasks are displayed in the first viewing pane. A list of the information items of a thrask selected from the displayed thrasks is displayed in the second viewing pane. For each of the displayed information items at least one of the respective metadata is displayed. Some of the content of an information item selected from the list of the displayed information items is displayed in the third viewing pane.

User interface for a message-based system having embedded information management capabilities

A method, system and computer program for operating an application server using email messages uses the address format of the email address of an incoming email message to invoke an application to process the content of an incoming message. Each application available on the server defines acceptable address formats of the email addresses of messages that it will accept for processing. An application may generate a reply to an incoming email message, or may generate an event, to advance processing of a task. The application server may also determine a recipient email address of an actual recipient of the incoming e-mail, and transmit the incoming e-mail message to the recipient email address. In this case, the application server functions by interposing itself in the email channel between two recipients.

System, method and article of manufacture for enhancing electronic messages

A method and a system for managing and tracking information items within a message-based system on a user system are disclosed. The message-based system has a viewer. A thrask is generated. The thrask includes at least one information item having a set of metadata. A new information is sorted into the thrask in accordance with at least one criterion. The thrask and at least one of the metadata of one of the information items in the thrask are displayed in the viewer.

Message-based system having embedded information management capabilities

A system, method and article of manufacture are provided for fast mapping from a document management system to a relational database. A database is provided having a plurality of tables relating to a plurality property groups. Each property group in the database has a set of properties associated therewith. In the database, property groups having at least one common property with one another are grouped into a common table while property groups having no common properties are grouped into separate tables in the database. When a document having one or more properties is provided, a determination is made as to which of the property groups in the database apply to the document. The properties of the document are then mapped to those tables in the database which include a property group that has been determined to apply to the document.

A system, method and article of manufacture are provided for managing data items. One or more roles are defined with each role comprising a set of attributes. The roles may then be then associated with zero, one, or more data items.
