A patterned surface structure formed from a ferrofluidic polymer resin having a plurality of magnetic nanoparticles. The polymer resin is patterned with a magnetic field that is applied to the ferrofluidic polymer resin during curing. The ferrofluidic polymer resin may be cast over a non-magnetic planar substrate. A magnetic field is applied to the ferrofluidic polymer resin to induce a pattern in a surface of the ferrofluidic polymer resin. The patterned ferrofluidic polymer resin is then cured to form the permanently patterned surface.

Patterning structures in reactive ferrofluidic polymer resins

A rechargeable calcium battery formed from a calcium metal anode, a cathode formed from a composite carbon/sulfur (C/S), a metal oxide, or a metal sulfide, and a multi-component electrolyte containing a mixture of different salts. The calcium anode is formed as a thin, pure calcium metal foil that is polished and combined with a copper collector for redox activity. The cathode may be formed from a carbon-sulfur (CS) composite or metal oxide/sulfide, such as CaMOor CaMS, or formed from binary and ternary metals, such as CaM1aM2bO/Sand CaMMMO/S. The battery also includes a multi-component electrolyte including calcium salts, such as Ca(TSFI), Ca(ClO), Ca(BF), and CaPF, or the pairing of lithium, sodium and potassium salts with one of the anions, such as Ca(TFSI), NaPF, and Li(TFSI).

Rechargeable calcium battery

A metallo-dielectric waveguide array used as an encapsulation material for silicon solar cells. The array is produced through light-induced self-writing combined with in situ photochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Each waveguide comprises a cylindrical core consisting of a high refractive index polymer and silver nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed in its medium, all of which are surrounded by a low refractive index common cladding. These waveguide array films are processed directly over a silicon solar cell.

Ultrawide-angle light collecting modules formed by direct light-writing of nanoparticle-based metallo-dielectric optical waveguides

A conductive nanoporous membrane system has a first ion exchange membrane formed from a nanoporous substrate that is coated with a metal or carbon or conductive polymers to form a conductive membrane, a second ion exchange membrane that is also formed from a nanoporous substrate coated with a metal to form a conductive membrane is positioned in spaced relation to the first conductive membrane and coupled to a voltage source; the negatively potential membrane acts as a cation exchange membrane in the presence of an electrolyte, and the positively connected electrode behave as anodic exchange membrane in the presence of an electrolyte due to the formation of electrical double layers at the interface between metal and liquid electrolyte.

Electro-controllable ion exchange membrane

The formation of microporous surfaces through polymer induced phase separation in a photopolymer solvent mixture using photopolymerization via light self-focusing and self-trapping. The self-trapping of light sets fixed regions of brightness and darkness, sustained by the polymerization of light, and then wave guiding within the substrate. Phase separation occurs with the solvent phase separating in the regions of darkness and crosslinking in the regions of brightness. Upon removal of the solvent, precise and uniformly dispersed pores are created in the surface. The pore size and spacing may be tuned by adjusting the weight fraction of the photopolymer solvent mixture as well as through changes in the mask pattern.
