The present invention relates to a rotor control system for actuating pitch of pitch adjustable rotor blades of a wind turbine in order to reduce edgewise blade vibrations. The system comprises a pitch actuation unit being arranged to receive an edgewise load signal and apply m-blade coordinate transformations, such as the Coleman transformations, to the edgewise load signal. Based on a selected signal component at either a backward whirling frequency or a forward whirling frequency, a modified modification signal is obtained.

Reduction of edgewise vibrations using blade load signal

The present invention relates to a rotor control system for actuating pitch of pitch adjustable rotor blades of a wind turbine in order to reduce edgewise blade vibrations. The system comprises a pitch actuation unit being arranged to receive a torsional vibration signal and apply a filter to the torsional vibration signal to couple the torsional vibration signal to an edgewise vibration of the rotor blades. An m-blade coordinate transformation, such as the Coleman transformation, is applied to the filtered torsional vibrational signal to obtain pitch modification signals.

The invention provides a method of shutting down a wind turbine, the wind turbine comprising a rotor with a plurality of blades; and a generator system coupled to the rotor. The method comprises: operating the generator system to generate electrical power and apply a load torque to the rotor; controlling the electrical power generated with a power reference signal; determining that a shutdown of the wind turbine is required; in response to the determination that a shutdown of the wind turbine is required, changing the power reference signal so as to increase the electrical power generated thereby slowing the rotor; determining that a speed of the rotor has reduced below a threshold; and in response to the determination that the speed of the rotor has decreased below the threshold, changing a pitch of the blades to further slow the rotor.

Method of shutting down a wind turbine

Embodiments herein describe in-plane vibration damping techniques for MR turbines. The MR turbines can include arms that extend from a common tower and support multiple rotors. Because the rotors are disposed laterally away from the tower, side-to-side motion of the tower causes the rotors to have an angled trajectory that includes both lateral and vertical displacement. In addition, a rotor disposed on one side of the tower in MR turbine can have a very different trajectory than a rotor disposed on the opposite side of the tower. To account for the vertical displacement and the different trajectories, in one embodiment, a controller can use different phase offsets for each rotor when calculating pitch offsets for performing in-plane vibration damping. In another embodiment, the controller can use both the lateral and vertical accelerations of the rotors to identify the pitch offsets for the rotors to perform in-plane vibration damping.

Damping of in-plane vibrations in multi-rotor structures

A wind turbine system comprising a nacelle mounted on a tower, a rotor having a plurality of blades and a boundary layer control system configured to control airflow through blade surface openings in each of the blades. The wind turbine system includes a control system configured to perform at least one of the following: to monitor an operational speed parameter of the wind turbine, and to activate the boundary layer control system if it is determined that the 1 operational speed parameter exceeds a predetermined speed parameter threshold; to monitor tower motion and to activate the boundary layer control system based on a determination of excessive tower motion; to monitor for a wind turbine shutdown condition, and to activate the boundary layer control system if it is determined that a wind turbine shutdown condition has been identified; and to monitor the aerodynamic loads on the blades, and to activate the boundary layer control system also based on a determination of excessive blade loads. The system thereby provides an approach to activating and deactivating the boundary layer control system to reduce operational risk to the wind turbine.

Relating to wind turbines having blades equipped with boundary layer control system

The invention relates to a control apparatus and method for controlling the rotor blades of a wind turbine, and in particular to controlling the rotor blades during an extreme wind event. An extended mode of operation of the wind turbine rotor beyond the cut-out wind speed is provided. In the extended mode of operation, the pitch of the wind turbine blades is actively controlled so that the rotor and the generator idle at a designated rotational speed. The rotational speed may be relatively high, say 15 to 20% of the nominal speed, compared with minimal speeds experienced by purely feathered wind turbine blades, and may be further controlled as a function of the incident wind speed. Output power control in the extended mode may be zero but is preferably a low, but non-zero value. The output power so produced may then be used as an auxiliary power source for controlling the wind turbine in situations where the utility grid fails.

Rotor blade control for high winds

The present invention refers to a method for operating a wind turbine, the wind turbine particularly comprising a tower and a rotor with rotor blades. The pitch angles of the rotor blades are adjusted to generate a force on the rotor and the tower. The force is adjusted to counteract and damp an oscillation. The adjustment is enabled by an activation decision unit, if the activation decision unit decides that certain parameters characterising the oscillation or loads of the tower indicate a requirement and/or if the activation decision unit determines that the generated force is sufficient to counteract an oscillation of the tower. In various embodiments the parameters characterising the oscillation or loads of the tower comprise current oscillations and their amplitude, an estimate of loads incurred in the turbine structure, an estimate whether damping in the near future might become necessary, an indication whether a different oscillation damping algorithm than individual blade pitch control is currently performing, and an indication whether a wind speed is above a certain portion of a rated wind speed.

Selective wind turbine damping using active damping system

The invention relates to a method for determining dynamic parameters associated with damping properties of a wind turbine. The method involves active excitation of tower oscillations by adjusting the pitch or rotor torque. After the active excitation, the parameters can be determined from the passive decay of the excited oscillations. Alternatively, the oscillations can be actively damped, so that the parameters can be determined from the active decay of the excited oscillations. The method for promoting oscillations may be triggered in response to different events or in response to predetermined times for determining the actual dynamic parameters.
