Methods and devices for enabling and disabling applications using voice are described herein. In some embodiments, an individual speak an utterance to their electronic device, which may send audio data representing the utterance to a backend system. The backend system may generate text data representing the utterance, and may determine that an intent of the utterance was for an application to be enabled or disabled for their user account on the backend system. If, for instance, the intent was to enable the application, the backend system may receive one or more rules for performing functionalities of the application, as well as one or more sample templates of sample utterances and sample responses that future utterances may use when requesting the application. Furthermore, one or more invocation phrases that may be used within the future utterances to invoke the application may be received, along with slot values for the sample templates.

Voice enablement and disablement of speech processing functionality

Techniques for selecting a skill, to respond to a user input, using skill rankings are described. A skill's ranking may be determined in different manners. In one example, a skill's ranking may be determined based on a number of different users inputting commands that invoke the skill over a period of time. In another example, a skill's ranking may be determined based on a number of different devices that capture user inputs that invoke the skill over a period of time. A system may determine whether to automatically enable a skill (e.g., without user input received after the original user input), or ask the user whether the skill should be enabled, based on the skill's ranking. Moreover, a system may use a skill's ranking to determine whether to interact with a user, to enable the skill, using a graphical user interface or a voice user interface.

Functionality is disclosed herein for changing a user experience using application events. Events that occur while an application is executing are provided to an application service. The events may be stored on the computing device executing the application before the events are provided to the application service. The application service uses the events to generate a plan that includes data identifying one or more actions for the application to perform. The events used to generate the plan may include events received from other users who also interact with the application. The plan is used by an application to select one or more actions to perform to move the user interacting with the application closer to a goal state. The plan may be periodically updated.

Examples of an application experiment system are provided that can manage and run experiments for software applications. In one embodiment, the application experiment system receives definitions for experiments and treatments for an application, runs experiments in response to requests from users of the system, automatically allocates treatments to users of the application, logs experiment data and treatment allocation data, and/or reports experiment results data. The application experiment system enables application developers to test changes or features in a precise, controlled environment on a limited user base before deciding whether to deploy changes or features to all users of an application.

Technologies are described herein for performing experiments on a software application and identifying optimized experience configurations for the software application. An application experiment system receives an experiment configuration from a developer of the software application. Based on the experiment configuration, the application experiment system determines an experiment strategy and generates a set of experience configurations for testing. Users available to participate in the experiment are identified, and the set of experience configurations are allocated to user computing devices associated with the available users to configure instances of the software application executing on the user computing devices. Experiment data related to the execution of the instances of the software application are collected and analyzed by the application experiment system to identify the optimized experience configuration for the software application.
