Processing strain measurement signals from a first measured signal representing a first received backscattered optical signal for a first sensor&#x2014;the first measured signal associated with a first phase signal&#x2014;and a second measured signal representing a second received backscattered optical signal for a second sensor. The second measured signal is associated with a second phase signal constituting a consolidation of the first phase signal and an additional phase signal&#x2014;where the additional phase signal is unrecoverable from the first measured signal. The first phase signal is determined from the first measured signal and processed. The second phase signal is determined from the second measured signal, where the first phase signal and additional phase signal are indistinguishable in the phase domain. The second phase signal is processed to obtain the additional phase signal and a strain measurement signal is constructed using the processed first phase signal and additional phase signal.

Fibre-optic sensing

Fracture monitoring and characterization of a subterranean fracturing process is described. Hydraulic fracturing conditions intended to induce tensile crack opening or compressional crack closure of a fracture responsible for a microseismic event in the Earth formation are selected and a hydraulic fracturing operation is performed using the selected conditions to cause tensile crack opening or compressional crack closure of the fracture responsible for a microseismic event in the Earth formation. Induced motion data from the microseismic event is received using a plurality of receivers, and the received data is analyzed to track the development of the fracture responsible for the microseismic event and/or to track a proppant distribution within the fracture.

Fracture monitoring and characterisation

This invention provides a method for characterizing natural fracture networks or other textural networks in an Earth formation when using microseismic monitoring of a hydraulic fracturing job. The method comprises receiving () microseismic data from a hydraulic fracturing event, identifying a data subset () comprising components of the microseismic data associated with the one or more hydraulic fractures; and obtaining a remainder dataset () of the microseismic data by removing the subset from the microseismic data. One approach for identifying the data subset, after removing high uncertainty microseismic events, is to create a Voronoi diagram of a plurality of cells each associated with one of the microseismic events, determine a density for each cell, create a connectivity matrix of the high density cells and identify event clusters in the connectivity matrix which are aligned with a main growing direction of the hydraulic fracture.

System and method for microseismic analysis

A method of subsurface imaging is disclosed, the method involving using input data relating to the geometry of a fracture in a subsurface medium, mechanical properties of the medium and in-situ stress states in the medium, to model the behavior of the fracture and obtain predicted information relating to deformation of the fracture. The predicted information is then used to constrain the interpretation of measured microseismic data caused by movement of the fracture to determine characteristics of the movement and/or failure of the fracture.

A method of predicting wellbore stability is provided and includes: creating a parameterized model of a wellbore in laminated formation, the parameterized model including a plurality of laminated formation and wellbore related parameters; considering measurement data to determine the laminated formation and wellbore related parameters; updating the parameterized model by adopting the determined laminated formation and wellbore related parameters; and applying the updated parameterized model to derive a solution of wellbore stability.

Transversely isotropic model for wellbore stability analysis in laminated formations

A method and system for real time updating of an earth model. The efficiency with which an oil or gas well is constructed can be enhanced by updating the relevant earth model using real-time measurements of the effective density of the drilling fluid and other parameters. The method includes generating an earth model used for predicting potential problems in drilling of a borehole having a predetermined trajectory. Evaluations of the state of the borehole and local geological features are obtained which are based on the earth model. Real time data is used to create a diagnosis of the state of the borehole and local geological features. The evaluations are compared with a diagnosis to identify inconsistencies. A component of the earth model is identified that is both related to the identified inconsistency and has a high degree of uncertainty. The selected component of the earth model is then updated prior to completing construction of the borehole using the received data.
