A system and associated method for computerized rotational head impulse test (crHIT) to assess the semicircular canals of the human vestibular system clinically in patients with balance disorders. The system utilizes a rotary chair combined with a head mounted VOG system with head tracking sensors. The crHIT protocol uses the same physiologic principles as the known video head impulse test (vHIT). The crHIT utilizes whole-body rotation via the chair to yield a persistent controlled, repeatable, comfortable, reliable stimulus can be delivered while recording eye movements with video-oculogaphy.

A head mounted compact goggle based video oculography system comprises: a goggle base surrounding the subject's eyes; an angled hot mirror; at least one digital camera attached to the goggle base along the top side of the goggle base taking images of at least one of the subject's eyes via a hot mirror reflection; an integral display for selectively displaying visual stimulus to the subject through the hot mirror and attached to the goggle base along the rear side of the goggle base; a controller coupled to the display generating each visual stimulus for each neuro-otologic test to be displayed to the subject via the display and coupled to each digital camera and receiving and storing data signals there from, the controller configured to calculate eye related data from the digital camera images during each neuro-otologic test, and configured to display the eye related data to users.

A video oculography based neuro-otologic testing and evaluation apparatus and associated method comprises the steps of: Obtaining images of the subject's eyes with a digital camera; Selectively displaying visual stimulus to the subject on a display; Generating each visual stimulus to be displayed from a controller; Receiving and storing data signals from each digital camera in the controller; Calculating eye related data from the digital camera images and visual stimulus; Displaying the eye related data to users; Generating a video synchronization signal by the controller associated with each visual stimulus which identifies when the display is displaying the associated visual stimulus; Receiving and coupling the video synchronization signal with at least the eye data from the digital camera; and Synchronizing calculations based upon the eye data and the visual stimulus by the controller.
