A downhole tool () comprises a power control module (), which includes a battery pack () for supplying power to components of the tool, and an electronic control circuit () for controlling the supply of power by the battery pack. The electronic control circuit () and battery pack () are contained within a housing () that allows their insertion and removal as a single unit. The tool () also comprises an electric motor () for powering a gear assembly (), and a braking system comprising an electrical and a magnetic brake for braking the motor () when required. The gear assembly () comprises two or more stages (), each having a sun gear () with a respective diameter, and each sun gearhaving a raised convex dimple (LD,UD,LD,UD) that is in constant touching contact with the adjacent sun gear's () raised convex dimple (LD,UD,LD,UD), allowing load experienced by the tool () to be transferred along a load path including the dimples (LD,UD,LD,UD), reducing vibrations and shocks.

Downhole tool

A roller toolthat can be connected into a string for deployment into an oil or gas well includes at least two rollers or wheelslocated on each side of the roller tool, with axes of rotation that are perpendicular to the axis of the roller tool. In one embodiment, a radio-frequency identification device for use in a wellbore includes a housing made of a polymer; and an antenna disposed in the housing. The polymer may be selected from the group consisting of an elastomer, a plastic, a rubber, a thermoplastic elastomer, and combinations thereof. The RFID device may also include a fill material disposed in the housing.

A connection mechanism () comprises first and second components () which can be selectively coupled together, one of the first or second components comprises a locking member () which is moveable between a first state and a second state, the other of the first or second component comprises means () for initially moving the locking member from the first to the second state as the first and second components are initially drawn together and means () for returning the locking member to the first state once the first and second components are fully engaged together to prevent disengagement of the first and second components.

Connection mechanism

A time delay apparatus for use with a downhole tool in a wellbore casing. In an exemplary embodiment, the apparatus includes an electronic circuit comprising a timer, a fusible link, a split spool device that includes a center pin held in place in a restrained position with a spool and a spring element surrounding the spool. A pressure applied to a trigger device, such as a rupture disk, activates a pressure switch and starts a timer, configured with a preset countdown time, in the electronic circuit. On expiration of the timer, the timer block of the electronic circuit generates a signal to cause breaking of the fusible link and releasing of the spring element such that the center pin of the split spool travels to a functional position and activates the downhole tool.

Electronic time delay apparatus and method

A controller () for mounting on or within a downhole tool () is provided and comprises a touch operated control device () having a touchable surface () mounted within an aperture () formed in a sidewall () of the downhole tool () such that the touchable surface () is outwardly facing and is the radially outermost component of the controller () such that an operator may touch the touchable surface () without having to disassemble the downhole tool (). The controller () also comprises one or more microprocessors () in electrical or electronic communication with the touch operated control device (), where the microprocessor () is capable of being programmed by an operator to instruct the downhole tool () to actuate wherein the operator instructs the controller () by touching the touchable surface () with one or more distinct touches.

Apparatus and method for completing a wellbore including providing a packer having an inner mandrel, alternate flow channels along the inner mandrel, and a sealing element external to the inner mandrel, including connecting packer to tubular body, then running the packer and connected tubular body into the wellbore. In one aspect, the packer and connected tubular body may be placed along an open-hole portion of the wellbore. Tubular body may be a sand screen, with the sand screen comprising a base pipe, a surrounding filter medium, and alternate flow channels. The method includes setting a packer and injecting a gravel slurry into an annular region formed between the tubular body and the surrounding wellbore, and then further injecting the gravel slurry through the alternate flow channels to allow the gravel slurry to at least partially bypass sealing element of the packer.

Completing a wellbore in a subsurface formation with packer assembly having first mechanically-set packer as first zonal isolation tool, and second zonal isolation tool comprises internal bore for receiving production fluids, and alternate flow channels. First packer has alternate flow channels around inner mandrel, and sealing element external to inner mandrel and includes operatively connecting packer assembly to a sand screen, and running into wellbore. First packer set by actuating sealing element into engagement with surrounding open-hole portion of the wellbore. Thereafter, injecting a gravel slurry and further injecting the gravel slurry through the alternate flow channels to allow it to bypass the sealing element, resulting in a gravel packed wellbore within an annular region between sand screen and surrounding formation below packer assembly.

Wellbore apparatus and methods for multi-zone well completion, production and injection

Method for completing a wellbore in a subsurface formation includes providing a sand control device representing one or more joints of sand screens, and a packer assembly along the joints with at least one mechanically-set packer with at least one alternate flow channel therein. Running the packer assembly and connected sand screen into the wellbore, setting a mechanically-set packer into engagement with the surrounding wellbore, injecting gravel slurry into the wellbore to form a gravel pack. An elongated isolation string is run into the sand control device across the packer assembly with valves that serve as an inflow control device. Thereafter, seals are activated around the isolation string and adjacent the packer assembly. A zonal isolation apparatus allows flow control to be provided above and below packer assembly.

Wellbore apparatus and methods for zonal isolations and flow control

A packer for a well is described. The packer comprises at least one packing element, at least one anchoring element, and a mandrel coupled to the at least one anchoring element. The packer is arranged such that, once set, the mandrel is free to move with respect to the packing and anchoring elements. In one embodiment the at least one anchoring element is integral with the at least one packing element. In an alternative embodiment the at least one anchoring element is separate from the at least one packing element.

Packer

A packer for a well. The packer comprises a seal element and seal setting apparatus. The seal setting apparatus is moveable with respect to the seal element in a setting direction to apply a setting force to the seal element to move the seal element from a run-in configuration to a set configuration in which, in use, the seal element forms a contact seal with a conduit wall. In use, the packer is arranged such that, in the set configuration, a pressure differential across the packer, which creates a force in the setting direction, will increase the setting force applied by the seal setting apparatus to the seal element to maintain the seal.
