A method for installing an electric submersible pump (ESP) in a well includes installing a plug in the well below a well tree. An upper and lower master valve on the tree are closed. Closure elements are removed from the lower master valve and replaced with gate seats, and a replacement gate block. The replacement gate block has a seat for a cable hanger. The upper master valve is opened. The plug is removed and the ESP extended into the well on an electrical cable. A cable hanger is affixed to the cable and is seated in the seat. The cable hanger has sealing elements to engage the seat and an electrical connector. The electrical connector is oriented to enable access through a side opening in the replacement gate block.

Method and system for deploying an electric submersible pump in a live well

A method of deploying a pump in a well production tubing using an electrical cable includes attaching a downhole barrier valve (DBV) to a spoolable conveyance. The DBV is closed to flow in both directions until a differential pressure across the DBV exceeds a first threshold. The DBV is closed to flow when the differential pressure falls below the first threshold. The DBV is moved to a selected depth in the well by extending the conveyance through a lubricator attached to a wellhead at an upper end of the production tubing. The spoolable conveyance is withdrawn from the well. The pump is attached to the electrical cable and is moved through the wellhead and the production tubing by extending the cable until the pump reaches a selected setting depth in the well.

Method for deploying a well pump on an electrical cable

Master valve and cable hanger system for deploying and making electrical connection to an electric submersible pump. A landing for the cable hanger () is in the through bore below the valve closure element. The landing has a seal area and a bore transverse to the through bore penetrating into the seal area for allowing electric connection to the pump. The cable hanger has a seal section having longitudinally spaced apart seals engageable with an interior of the seal area, electrical contacts disposed between the seals, and a lockdown profile. Flow ports are arranged to bypass seal area and seal section. A blanking plug () is disposed in the transverse bore to seal the seal area prior to insertion of the cable hanger.

A wellhead valve assembly feedthrough for a cable or conduit comprises a lower connector disposed within the wellhead valve assembly and being coupled to an upper end of a cable or conduit disposed in a wellbore, and a moveable upper connector disposed above the lower connector, the upper connector extensible to connect to the lower connector and retractable to disconnect from the lower connector. The wellhead valve assembly feedthrough further includes a sealed exit arrangement having a segment of conduit or cable passing therethrough to outside the wellhead valve assembly, wherein one end of the segment of conduit of cable is connected to the upper connector.

A method for deploying a pump system in a wellbore includes coupling the pump system to one end of a tubing encapsulated cable. The cable is extended into a wellbore drilled through a subsurface fluid producing formation. The tubing encapsulated cable has an outer tube extending substantially continuously from the end thereof connected to the pump system to a surface end of the cable. The outer tube is made from material selected to exclude fluid in the wellbore from an interior of the outer tube. The cable includes at least one electrical conductor disposed inside the outer tube, wherein a rated load current of the at least one electrical conductor is selected such that substantially continuous electrical current drawn by the electrical load device exceeds the rated current of the at least one electrical conductor.
