An efficient image capture system is disclosed that integrates functions to control a lens including one or more of focus or object distance, zoom, temperature compensation, and stabilization within an image signal processor (ISP) with appropriate algorithms. In particular, the integrated ISP circuitry may control the motion of the focus and zoom optics of an optical assembly, control stabilization, control the flash, provide enhanced functions and features for controlling the zoom and focus lenses to enable enhanced image capture sequences and/or tracking lens data, provide a set of algorithms within the ISP to alter the aspect ratio (both height and width of an image) of the image, for example to compensate for the addition of an anamorphic lens, and integrate an anamorphic lens into the module to alter an image's projected aspect ratio onto the focal plane array.

Method and apparatus for controlling a lens, and camera module incorporating same

An anamorphic imaging system is disclosed which maximizes the use of available image area to minimize display magnification and image degradation due to display magnification, reduces the amount of anamorphic squeeze or stretch during photography to lower image degradation due to anamorphosis, and in film applications, utilizes a film frame that is only three perforations in height to reduce the amount of original film needed. The frame for either film or digital applications has an aspect ratio of approximately 16:9, is contained within the total available frame area of a three-perforation frame or digital imager, and is sized to maximize image area. In preferred embodiments, the image capture area is approximately 0.900 inches wide by approximately 0.506 inches tall.

Anamorphic three-perforation imaging system

A zoom lens is disclosed having a zoom ratio larger than four with a field of view at the short focal length position larger than 85 degrees and with a minimal number of moving groups. The zoom lens utilizes a compound zoom structure comprising an NP or NPP zoom kernel followed by a P or PP zoom relay, with only two or three moving groups that can be used for both zooming, focusing and athermalization. An overall compact package size is achieved by the use of prisms to fold the optical path in strategic locations. An optional variable power liquid cell can provide close focusing with little or no focus breathing.

Wide-range, wide-angle compound zoom with simplified zooming structure

A zoom lens system is disclosed. The zoom lens system forms a final image of an object and a first intermediate real image between the object and the final image. The zoom lens system includes a first optical unit located between the object and the first intermediate real image. The first optical unit comprises at least one optical subunit which is moved to change the size (magnification) of the first intermediate real image. The zoom lens system also includes a second optical unit located between the first intermediate real image and the final image, at least a portion of which is moved to change the size (magnification) of the final image. The zoom lens system provides a wide zoom range of focal lengths with continuous zooming between the focal lengths.

Zoom lens system

A compact high performance objective zoom lens system is disclosed that provides optimum optical performance over the entire zoom focal length range at focus distances from close to infinity. The system comprises, from object space to image space, one focusing objective lens group (comprising a focus lens group and a stationary lens group) and three zoom lens groups aligned on the optical axis. The focus lens group and the zoom lens groups are axially movable along the optical axis for focusing and zooming. In one embodiment, the system has a focal length zoom region from about 19 mm to 90 mm, an aperture of F/2.7 and substantially the same optical performance as high quality fixed objective lenses of the same range. The performance characteristics of this system makes it suitable for use with both film and electronic detector cameras.

Compact high performance zoom lens system

A rear anamorph is disclosed with at least two cylindrically surfaced elements oriented in one direction primarily for squeezing or stretching the image with a ratio of less than 2:1, and at least two cylindrically surfaced elements oriented in a second direction primarily for aberration control. The cylindrically surfaced elements oriented in one direction may be moved as a group along the optical axis, and the cylindrically surfaced elements oriented in the second direction may also be moved as a group along the optical axis. In addition, the entire rear anamorph may be moved together, and a lens unit attached to the rear anamorph may also be moved with respect to the rear anamorph. With these adjustments, the two image planes formed by the two focal lengths created by the cylindrically surfaced elements in the two directions may be aligned with each other and superimposed on the nominal image plane.

Anamorphic imaging system

A zoom lens system is disclosed. The zoom lens system forms a final image of an object and a first intermediate real image between the object and the final image. The zoom lens system includes a first optical unit located between the object and the first intermediate real image. A method for modifying the spectrum of light rays passing through an objective lens to an electronic camera that includes providing an interference type filter within the objective lens. The interference type filter may be a coating on a separate optical element added to the objective lens or on a normal optical component of the objective lens. The interference filter coating is located along the optical axis where the light rays are substantially collimated and have a minimum light ray incidence angle with respect to the coating surface, which angle should not exceed 15 degrees for any of the light rays passing therethrough.

Method and objective lens for spectrally modifying light for an electronic camera

A method and lens system for modifying the modulation transfer function of the light passing through the lens system to a camera or other imaging system that includes providing a spatial frequency response modifying (SFRM) filter within the lens system. The SFRM filter may be a thin film(s) or other type of modifying filter, including any conventional diffusion filters. The SFRM filter is located along the optical axis where the on-axis, zero field angle light rays are collimated in any lens system and form light beam(s) of a substantially constant cross sectional area throughout the range of focusing of a prime objective lens or throughout the ranges of zooming and focusing of an objective zoom lens for providing a consistent modulation transfer function of the light reaching the camera or other imaging system.

Method and lens system for modifying the modulation transfer function of light for a camera

A viewfinder eyepiece for a camera having a video signal tap, particularly a professional high definition video camera, for viewing the display screen of a display device, such as a CRT, in the viewfinder. The eyepiece includes a negative powered lens on an optical axis and positioned adjacent the display screen, a first positive powered lens on the optical axis is spaced from the negative powered lens is located at an eye-viewing end of the eyepiece, and a second positive powered lens positioned on the optical axis between the negative powered lens and the first positive powered lens. The second positive lens is mounted in the eyepiece to be movable along the optical axis in the space between the negative powered lens and the first positive powered lens for adjusting the focus on the display screen through the eyepiece. The combined display device and eyepiece module is releasably connected to the rest of the viewfinder and extensions can be installed for modifying the view position without affecting the image viewing through the eyepiece.

High performance viewfinder eyepiece with a large diopter focus range

An adjustable viewfinder optical system for a shoulder-supported movie or video camera having interchangeable objective lenses. The system includes first and second lens groups aligned on an optical axis for receiving and relaying an image received from the objective lens of the camera to the viewer's eye. The first lens group is in a forwardly extending portion of the viewfinder that is pivotally joined to a rearwardly extending portion of the viewfinder containing the second lens group. The forwardly extending portion has a telescoping portion for varying the eye position of the viewer relative to the camera in the fore-and aft direction. The light is collimated between the first and second lens groups at the telescoping portion, whereby the image viewed in the viewfinder remains in focus and the same magnification throughout the telescoping adjustment movement.

Adjustable viewfinder optical system for shoulder-supported cameras

A thermal compensation system for an optical lens that has a focus adjustment with visible focus distance numerals and a juxtaposed index line for identifying the focus distance. The index line is provided on an internal ring slidably mounted to rotate circumferentially with respect to a barrel portion of the optical lens that includes the focus distance numerals. An actuator mounted within the optical lens includes a wax motor that is responsive to temperature changes and mechanical lever that engages both the wax motor and the ring for causing circumferential movement of a ring in response to actuation movement of the wax motor as caused by temperature changes. Further, an adjustment cam is provided for adjusting the relative positions of the wax motor and lever for calibrating the temperature responsive movements of the ring bearing the index line.

Thermal compensation system for lens focus adjustment

A high performance zoom lens system formed by multiple focus lens groups, multiple zoom lens groups and single auxiliary lens group aligned in that order on a common optical axis and arranged to collect radiation emanating from an object space and deliver that radiation to an axially stationary real image in an image space, such as on a film plane or video CCD. The multiple focus lens groups comprise a first focus lens group of negative optical power that is axially movable and contains at least one non-spherical, non-plano, optically refractive surface, and a second focus lens group of positive optical power that is axially movable. The multiple zoom lens groups comprise a first zoom lens group of negative optical power that is axially movable, and a second zoom lens group of positive optical power that is axially movable and contains an optical stop or iris. The single auxiliary lens group is of relatively weak positive optical power compared to the other lens groups, is axially stationary and contains at least one non-spherical, non-plano optically refractive surface. The remaining optically refractive surfaces of said zoom lens system being substantially spherical or plano. By axial positioning of said multiple focus lens groups and said multiple zoom lens groups, the zoom lens system provides a high level of optical performance at said real image through its entire and substantial focusing and zooming ranges.

High performance zoom lens system

A variable length telescoping viewfinder for cameras that provides a variably adjustable eye viewing distance relative to the camera without changing the focus or magnification of the scene being photographed throughout the telescoping movement of the viewfinder. The light rays of the real image supplied to the viewfinder directly or indirectly from the camera are passed through a field lens, Pechan prism, relay lens system forming collimated light rays from the fixed front module to the movable rear module wherein lens elements form an intermediate image that is viewed through an eyepiece lens group. The front module is weakly powered and of a substantial effective optical length because of the inclusion of the Pechan prism. The image forming lens group of the rear module is weakly powered whereby relative telescopic movement between the front and rear modules does not adversely affect the location, focus or magnification of the intermediate image throughout the range of movement. A magnification lens group is provided for selectively magnifying the intermediate image by moving the magnification lens group into and off the optical axis. The Pechan prism also allows proper orientation of the image. The eyepiece lens group may include a movable lens subgroup for precise focusing.
