A fishing reel centrifugal brake assembly is keyed to a spool. The assembly retains slidable brake shoes that extend to contact a ring and speed adjust shoes that extend to contact a conical surface. Brake shoe channels are received on brake assembly rails. Speed adjust shoes apply centrifugal force against the conical surface to move the assembly axially when rotated. The brake assembly is urged away from the brake ring and towards the spool at lower rotational speeds. Braking resulting from brake shoes/brake ring contact is adjustable by a control dial that defines a camming surface that moves the brake ring axially to position a smaller or larger diameter portion of the brake ring adjacent to the brake shoes. Frame springs press the brake ring against the camming surface. A brake spring retainer maintains frame spring orientation when springs are compressed, which reduces the possible of reel jams.

A device has a spool rotatable about an axis in a reel, and a braking structure that effects a braking force against rotation of the spool, the braking force being adjustable by changing a proximity of the braking structure relative to the spool. The device includes at least one tap in a fixed relationship with respect to the braking structure, and a brake dial accessible outside the reel and providing a threaded portion that accepts the at least one tap, the brake dial being rotatable to change the proximity of the braking structure relative to the spool by movement of the tap.

A fishing reel includes a frame and a crank shaft mounted to the frame. A kick lever is provided for selective engagement with teeth of a ratchet element keyed to the crank shaft. The kick lever selectively engages the ratchet element to place the reel in one of a cast state and a retrieve state. In one embodiment, the kick lever defines a base portion, a support post, a tooth engaging post and a horizontal reinforcing member that define a window. The window receives an attachment member that slidably secures the kick lever and prevents the kick lever from vertical movement during heavy loads. The unique design of the kick lever prevents the kick lever from moving in undesired directions, thereby ensuring that smooth performance of the reel and prevention of jamming of the mechanism.

A fishing reel has a frame. A first cover assembly is affixed to a first side of the frame. A second cover assembly is affixed to a second side of the frame. At least one of the first cover assembly and the second cover assembly define at least one opening for receiving a panel member. The cover assemblies define supporting structure that is preferably made of a metal. The panel member defines non-supporting structure that is preferably made up of non-metallic structure such as plastic polymer and carbon fiber. The panel member may be transparent and is preferably replaceable to allow a user to customize the appearance of the reel.

A battery-powered lighted fishing rod including: a handle having a forward end; a shaft extending from the forward end of the handle; an electroluminescent lamp secured the shaft; and a power source for supplying electrical power to the electroluminescent lamp. In one embodiment, the handle includes a housing which houses a battery and a DC-to-AC inverter for converting the relatively low battery voltage to a relative high AC voltage suitable for driving the electroluminescent lamp and a cover. The cover mates with the housing to form a gripping surface on the handle.

A braking apparatus for a fishing reel. The braking apparatus includes a braking assembly. A contacting structure surrounds the braking assembly. A plurality of braking elements are slidably located within the braking assembly. The braking elements slidably move from a retracted position to an extended position. In the extended position, the braking elements make braking contact with the contacting structure. Each braking element has a protuberance that extends into an indentation on a selector. The selector is adapted to restrict selected braking elements from contacting the contacting structure. By rotating the selector, protuberances on selected braking elements are radially aligned with an outer wall segment of an indentation that is a desired distance from the selector axis and brake assembly axis. Therefore, selected braking elements are restricted from full radial movement, thereby controlling braking by selectively permitting greater or fewer braking elements from contacting the contacting structure.

A braking apparatus for a fishing reel comprising: a carrying structure for carrying a braking surface; at least one turnable cam including at least one ramp segment having an outer end and a base end; and at least one interacting member, projecting from the carrying structure, for interacting with the cam. The cam can be turned to selectively move the interacting member to any position between the base end and the outer end. When the interacting member is in contact with the base end, the braking surface will be located at a first position. When the interacting member is in contact with the outer end, the braking surface will be located at a second position different from the first position. The braking surface is positionable at any point between the first position and the second position. The inventive apparatus further comprises at least one biasing member for providing a biasing force such that, when the interacting member is positioned between the base end and the outer end of the ramp segment, the biasing force will act to cause the interacting member to remain in contact with the cam.

A braking apparatus for a fishing reel having at least two predetermined breaking positions comprising: a side cover having an aperture; a brake dial rotatably receivable in the aperture, the dial having a detent spring retained in a cavity therein; and a spool cover having one or more cam lobes wherein when the brake dial is positioned within the aperture, the spring lobe will interact with the cam lobe or lobes such that rotation of said brake dial will be inhibited in at least one direction until sufficient rotational force is applied to the brake dial to cause deformation of the detent spring sufficient to allow the spring lobe to traverse the interfering cam lobe.

A braking apparatus for a fishing reel comprising: a side cover; a brake dial rotatably positioned in the side cover such that the brake dial is externally accessible and operable from outside of the side cover, the brake dial having a plurality of predetermined positions; at least one cam lobe provided on either the brake dial or the side cover; and a V-spring operably attached to the other of the brake dial or the side cover for interaction with the cam lobe such that, when the V-spring is positioned against a portion of the cam lobe and the brake dial is not located in one of its predetermined positions, the V-spring will act against the portion of the cam lobe to urge the brake dial to rotate to one of the predetermined positions.
