Method of refining whole crude oil or a wide cut crude oil, the methods comprising a combination of a hydrotreating reactor, a distillation tower, and an optional flash evaporation separator. The methods can also include light ends processing, fluid catalytic cracking, reforming, hydrocracking, and demetalization. In some methods a whole crude oil is first processed through a flash evaporation separator to create a wide cut crude oil and in other methods, the flash evaporation separator is not used as the whole crude oil is first treated in a hydrotreater.

Heavy oil feeds are hydroprocessed in the presence of a solvent and in the presence of a catalyst with a median pore size of about 85 &#x212b; to about 120 &#x212b; under conditions that provide a variety of benefits. The solvent can be an added solvent or a portion of the liquid effluent from hydroprocessing. The processes allow for lower pressure processing of heavy oil feeds for extended processing times or extended catalyst lifetimes be reducing or mitigating the amount of coke formation on the hydroprocessing catalyst.

Hydroprocessing of heavy hydrocarbon feeds using small pore catalysts

Heavy oil feeds are hydroprocessed in the presence of a solvent under conditions that provide a variety of benefits. The solvent can be an added solvent or a portion of the liquid effluent from hydroprocessing. The processes allow for lower pressure processing of heavy oil feeds for extended processing times or extended catalyst lifetimes be reducing or mitigating the amount of coke formation on the hydroprocessing catalyst.

Hydroprocessing of heavy hydrocarbon feeds

Bulk catalysts that include a Group VI metal, a Group VIII metal, and at least 10-60% of an organic compound based component are formed. The bulk catalysts have increased stability through the use of a stabilizer in the organic compound based component, the use of an improved gas phase sulfidation, or a combination thereof. The bulk catalysts are suitable for hydroprocessing of hydrocarbon feeds.

Catalysts having increased stability

This invention is directed to a process for producing a hydroprocessed product. The invention is particularly advantageous in that substantially less hydrogen is absorbed during the process relative to conventional hydroprocessing methods. This benefit is achieved by using a particular solvent as a co-feed component. In particular, the solvent component contains at least one single ring aromatic compound and has a relatively low boiling point range compared to the heavy hydrocarbon oil component used as another co-feed component.

Use of low boiling point aromatic solvent in hydroprocessing heavy hydrocarbons

A reduced or partially reduced nickel-molybdenum catalyst prepared by a process having the steps of 1) reacting nickel carbonate and molybdenum oxide precursors to form nickel molybdate and 2) treating the nickel molybdate under reducing conditions to form the reduced or partially reduced nickel-molybdenum catalyst. There is also a process for making the catalyst. There is also a process for using the catalyst in the hydrogenation of an oxo aldehyde, thereby forming an oxo alcohol of high selectivity. There is also a process for forming an oxo alcohol from the hydroformylation/hydrogenation of an olefinic feedstream. There is also a process for forming an oxo alcohol by contacting formates, dimers, trimers, and organic acids with hydrogen in the presence of a reduced or partially reduced nickel-molybdenum catalyst. The foregoing processes are also useful with a catalyst having the general formula YZ wherein Y is nickel and/or cobalt and Z is molybdenum and/or tungsten; and wherein x ranges between about 0.25 to about 4.0. There are also reduced or partially reduced catalysts of the general formula NiMo or YZ wherein x ranges between about 0.25 to about 4.0 and wherein oxide precursors of the catalysts are substantially free of ammonium groups.

Hydrogenation of oxo aldehydes to oxo alcohols in the presence of a nickel-molybdenum catalyst

A process for increasing the hydrogenation activity, particularly the carbon monoxide hydrogenation activity, of a catalyst or catalyst precursor comprised of a particulate solids support component and a catalytic metal, or metals component, preferably cobalt; cobalt alone or cobalt and an additional metal, or metals added to promote or modify the reaction produced by the cobalt. Treatment of the catalyst, or catalyst precursor is conducted at low temperature ranging from ambient to about 275&deg; C. sufficient to form on the surface of a catalyst precursor, e.g., a cobalt catalyst precursor, a cobalt metal hydroxide, low valence cobalt metal oxide, or mixture of cobalt metal hydroxide and low valence cobalt metal oxide. Sometimes also metallic metal, e.g., cobalt, is also formed, and dispersed on the surface of the support. On reduction, as may be produced by contact and treatment of the catalyst or catalyst precursor with hydrogen, the oxidized metal, or metals component of the catalyst or catalyst precursor is reduced to elemental or metallic metal, and the activity of the catalyst thereby increased. A catalyst, activated or produced in this manner, is a useful composition of matter, the catalyst being particularly useful for efficiently conducting carbon monoxide hydrogenation reactions, especially F-T synthesis reactions, to provide a variety of useful products.

Process for increasing carbon monoxide hydrogenation activity of catalysts via low temperature oxidation with water, steam or mixture thereof

A catalyst precursor comprising a composite of a solids support, or powder component, and a compound or salt of a metal, or metals component, inclusive of cobalt, is upon reduction rendered catalytically active for conducting hydrogenation reactions, especially carbon monoxide hydrogenation reactions by contact at low temperature with liquid water, or steam, or a mixture of liquid water and steam, sufficient to oxidize and convert the metal, or metals component of the catalyst precursor to a metal hydroxide, low oxygen-containing metal oxide, or mixture of metal hydroxide and low oxygen-containing metal oxide. On reduction, as may be produced by contact and treatment of the oxidized catalyst precursor with hydrogen, the now well dispersed oxide or hydroxylated catalytic metal, or metals component of the catalyst, is reduced to metallic metal, e.g., Co, and the catalyst thereby activated.

Cobalt catalyst compositions useful for conducting carbon monoxide hydrogenation reactions

A process for the partial catalytic oxidation of a hydrocarbon containing feed comprising contacting the feed with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst retained within a reaction zone in a fixed arrangement, wherein the catalyst comprises at least one catalytically active metal selected from the group consisting of silver and Group VIII elements supported on a porous ceramic carrier. The porous ceramic carrier has a distribution of total pores wherein about 70% of the total pores (1) have a volume-to-surface area (V/S) ration that is within about 20% of the mean V/S value for the total pores and no pores have a V/S ration that is greater than twice the mean V/S value for the total pores; (2) have a pore-to-pore distance between neighboring pores that is within about 25% of the mean pore-to-pore distance between neighboring pores; and (3) have a pore throat area that is within about 50% of the mean pore throat are for the pores. Additionally, about 50% of the total pores have a coordination number between neighboring pores that is within about 25% of the mean coordination number between neighboring pores. Preferably, the oxidation process comprises a multistage, staged oxygen, catalytic partial oxidation process having fewer than or equal to about five stages and including a first stage preheat temperature of greater than about 550&deg; C., and wherein the temperature of the product mixture in each stage following the first stage is at least about 700&deg; C.
