Method for making a porous graphene layer of a thickness of less than 100 nm with pores having an average size in the range of 5-900 nm, includes the following steps: providing a catalytically active substrate catalyzing graphene formation under chemical vapor deposition conditions, the catalytically active substrate in or on its surface being provided with a plurality of catalytically inactive domains having a size essentially corresponding to the size of the pores in the resultant porous graphene layer; chemical vapor deposition using a carbon source in the gas phase and formation of the porous graphene layer on the surface of the catalytically active substrate. The pores in the graphene layer are in situ formed due to the presence of the catalytically inactive domains.

Method for making porous graphene membranes and membranes produced using the method

A method for analysing an analyte () using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), comprising the following steps: (a) providing an essentially flat or topologically structured metal surface () of a SERS-active metal; (b) depositing the analyte () or an open pore matrix material () on the surface (); (c) depositing a multitude of nano-droplets () of a SERS-active metal on top of the analyte () or the open pore matrix material (), respectively; and (d) spectroscopically analysing, by scanning laser irradiation and using SERS, the analyte sandwiched between the surface () and the multitude of nano-droplets (). The diameter of the nano-droplets () is in the range of 5-70 nm, and the distance between adjacent nano-droplets () is smaller than their diameter, and wherein step c) is carried out by PVD or by sputtering SERS-active metal.

Method, uses thereof and device for analyzing an analyte using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Disclosed are a graphene membrane and a method for manufacturing the same. The graphene membrane includes a graphene layer having a porous pattern including a plurality of pores having a size of 5 to 100 nm and a supporter configured to support the graphene layer and including a plurality of pores having a greater size than the pores of the graphene layer.

A sensor with a substrate includes nanowires extending vertically from the substrate, a hafnia coating on the nanowires that provides hafnia coated nanowires, and a noble metal coating on the hafnia coated nanowires. The top of the hafnia and noble metal coated nanowires bent onto one another to create a canopy forest structure. There are numerous randomly arranged holes that let through scattered light. The many points of contact, hot spots, amplify signals. The methods include the steps of providing a Raman spectroscopy substrate, introducing nano crystals to the Raman spectroscopy substrate, growing a forest of nanowires from the nano crystals on the Raman spectroscopy substrate, coating the nanowires with hafnia providing hafnia coated nanowires, and coating the hafnia coated nanowires with a noble metal or other metal.

Metal-dielectric-CNT nanowires for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Provided herein composition and methods for nanoporous membranes comprising single walled, double walled, or multi-walled carbon nanotubes embedded in a matrix material. Average pore size of the carbon nanotube can be 6 nm or less. These membranes are a robust platform for the study of confined molecular transport, with applications in liquid and gas separations and chemical sensing including desalination, dialysis, and fabric formation.

A fuel cell according to one embodiment includes a porous electrolyte support structure defining an array of microchannels, the microchannels including fuel and oxidant microchannels; fuel electrodes formed along some of the microchannels; and oxidant electrodes formed along other of the microchannels. A method of making a fuel cell according to one embodiment includes forming an array of walls defining microchannels therebetween using at least one of molding, stamping, extrusion, injection and electrodeposition; processing the walls to make the walls porous, thereby creating a porous electrolyte support structure; forming anode electrodes along some of the microchannels; and forming cathode electrodes along other of the microchannels. Additional embodiments are also disclosed.

High power density fuel cell comprising an array of microchannels

Nanoporous membranes comprising single walled, double walled, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes embedded in a matrix material were fabricated for fluid mechanics and mass transfer studies on the nanometer scale and commercial applications. Average pore size can be 2 nm to 20 nm, or seven nm or less, or two nanometers or less. The membrane can be free of large voids spanning the membrane such that transport of material such as gas or liquid occurs exclusively through the tubes. Fast fluid, vapor, and liquid transport are observed. Versatile micromachining methods can be used for membrane fabrication. A single chip can comprise multiple membranes. These membranes are a robust platform for the study of confined molecular transport, with applications in liquid and gas separations and chemical sensing including desalination, dialysis, and fabric formation.
