A separator medium for electrochemical cells that contains at least one nonwoven sheet of polymeric fibers. The nonwoven sheet has a surface area of about 0.5 to about 1.5 m/g and has a maximum pore size that is equal to or more than 2.5 times the mean flow pore size and more than 11 times the minimum pore size. The sheet may be sulfonated to a level of 0.67% and demonstrates superior tensile properties after sulfonation and relative to previously known separators.

Separator media for electrochemical cells

The present invention is directed toward an improved air filtration medium comprising a single layer polymeric nanofibrous web comprising a single source randomly intermingled fiber network with electrostatic charge up to &#x2212;20 kV, a filtration efficiency range from about 70% to about 99.99%, and an air resistance less than about 2.5 mm wg for 0.3 diameter micron particles. The air filtration medium is made from a centrifugal melt spinning process.

Electret nanofibrous web as air filtration media

A method for recovering and treating hydrocarbon fluids using a hydraulic fracturing process wherein a fluid stream containing liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon species or both, produced water, suspended solids, and dissolved contaminants is recovered from a well. Hydrocarbon species are separated from the fluid stream to produce a second fluid stream comprising liquid water, which is then directed to a filter medium and essentially all of the second fluid stream passes through the medium to produce a permeate stream and a filter cake, and the filter cake is separated from the medium and disposed of separately.

Method for recovering hydrocarbon fluids using a hydraulic fracturing process

A filter including a filter medium with a pleated structure. The medium includes a nanoweb layer and a scrim, wherein the nanoweb layer contains fibers with a number average diameter less than 1 micron and layer thickness less than 50 microns. The ratio of total medium thickness-to-pleat spacing is less than 0.15 and the nanoweb layer has a basis weight of more than about 0.6 gsm. The nonwoven scrim can be a spunbond web, a dry-laid web, a wet-laid web, a cellulose fiber web, a melt blown web and a glass fiber web.

Pleated nanoweb structures

A method for filtering particles from water mist laden air involves passing the air through a medium that has a nanoweb layer in fluid contact with a hydrophobic nonwoven web. The hydrophobic web can be made of an intrinsically hydrophobic material, or can be coated with a hydrophobic coating. The medium does not undergo the large pressure drops normally associated with filtration of water mists and retains its efficiency well.

Air filtration medium with improved dust loading capacity and improved resistance to high humidity environment

A composite filter media structure includes, in an exemplary embodiment, a base substrate that includes a nonwoven synthetic fabric formed from a plurality of fibers with a spunbond process. The base substrate has a filtration efficiency of about 35% to less than 50%, measured in accordance with EN 1822 (1998) test procedure A nanofiber layer is deposited on one side of the base substrate. The composite filter media structure has a minimum filtration efficiency of about 70%, measured in accordance with EN 1822 (1998) test procedure.

A filter media comprising a nanofiber layer and a substrate layer; the nanofiber layer comprising a polymer material and having a fiber diameter of about 0.01 to 1.0 micron, a basis weight of about 0.5 to 30 gsm, and a thickness of at least about 2 microns, the nanofiber layer further having a surface stability index of at least about 5 kN/m, the media further being pleated.

Durable nanoweb scrim laminates

A composite filter media structure includes, in an exemplary embodiment, a base substrate that includes a nonwoven synthetic fabric formed from a plurality of fibers with a spunbond process. The base substrate has a minimum filtration efficiency of about 50%, measured in accordance with ASHRAE 52.2-1999 test procedure A nanofiber layer is deposited on one side of the base substrate. The composite filter media structure has a minimum filtration efficiency of about 75%, measured in accordance with ASHRAE 52.2-1999 test procedure.

A filtration medium is disclosed for use in air filters used in heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems. The medium contains at least one nanofiber layer of fibers having diameters less than 1 &#x3bc;m and at least one upstream layer, the medium having sufficient holding capacity for dust particles that efficiency loss and pressure loss across the medium are minimized during use.

A method of making a composite filter media includes, in an exemplary embodiment, forming a nonwoven fabric mat that includes a plurality of synthetic fibers by a spunbond process, and calendaring the nonwoven fabric mat with embossing calendar rolls to form a bond area pattern comprising a plurality of substantially parallel discontinuous lines of bond area to bond the synthetic fibers together to form a nonwoven fabric, the nonwoven fabric having a minimum filtration efficiency of about 50%, measured in accordance with ASHRAE 52.2-1999 test procedure. The method also includes applying a nanofiber layer by electro-blown spinning a polymer solution to form a plurality of nanofibers on at least one side of the nonwoven fabric mat to form the composite filter media, the composite filter media having a minimum filtration efficiency of about 75%, measured in accordance with ASHRAE 52.2-1999 test procedure.

Method of manufacturing a composite filter media

A method of making a composite filter media includes, in an exemplary embodiment, forming a nonwoven fabric mat that includes a plurality of synthetic fibers by a spunbond process, and calendering the nonwoven fabric mat with embossing calender rolls to form a bond area pattern comprising a plurality of substantially parallel discontinuous lines of bond area to bond the synthetic fibers together to form a nonwoven fabric, the nonwoven fabric having a filtration efficiency of about 35% to less than 50%, measured in accordance with EN 1822 (1998) test procedure. The method also includes applying a nanofiber layer by electro-blown spinning a polymer solution to form a plurality of nanofibers on at least one side of the nonwoven fabric mat to form the composite filter media, the composite filter media having a minimum filtration efficiency of about 70%, measured in accordance with EN 1822 (1998) test procedure.

A breathable composite sheet material, a method for making such a sheet material, and an absorbent article utilizing the sheet material are provided. The composite sheet material is comprised of a thermoplastic film adhered directly to a fibrous substrate. The thermoplastic film comprises at least 50% by weight of a polymer material from the group of block copolyether esters, block copolyether amides and polyurethanes. The substrate comprises a fibrous web of at least 50% by weight of polyolefin polymer synthetic fibers. The composite sheet exhibits a peel strength of at least 0.1 N/cm, a dynamic fluid transmission of less than about 0.75 g/mwhen subjected to an impact energy of about 2400 joules/m, and a moisture vapor transmission rate, according to the desiccant method, of at least 1500 g/m/24 hr. The absorbent article comprises (a) a topsheet; (b) a backsheet; and (c) an absorbent core located between the topsheet and the backsheet; wherein the backsheet comprises the non-porous, substantially fluid impermeable, moisture vapor permeable composite sheet material described above. The composite sheet material is oriented such that the film layer of the composite sheet material faces toward the absorbent core. The absorbent article may comprise a disposable diaper.

Breathable composite sheet structure and absorbent articles utilizing same

A full-surface bonded multiple component nonwoven fabric is provided that has an improved combination of tear strength and tensile strength at lower thicknesses than known in the art. The full-surface bonded multiple component webs have a void percent between about 3% and 56% and a Frazier permeability of at least 0.155 m/min-m. The full-surface bonded multiple component nonwoven fabrics can be prepared in a smooth-calendering process.
