An optical pickup for a recording medium includes a light source, an objective lens, a main photodetector, and a front photodetector. The configuration of the optical pickup enables converging or diverging of light to be incident on a plate beam splitter so that light can be received at an effective light receiving region of a front photodetector without interference due to internal reflection occurring in the plate beam splitter. In the alternative, a wedge beam splitter in the optical pickup includes first and second mirror planes at a predetermined angle to transmit and reflect incident light at a predetermined ratio. In the optical pickup, an amount of light that is exactly proportional to an output power of the light source can be detected, where the output power of the light source can be accurately controlled, thereby improving a linearity of the output power of the light source.

Optical pickup and a wedge beam splitter

A compatible optical pickup device includes a single light source to emit a light having a wavelength longer than 650 nm, an objective lens having a near axis area, a ring type annular lens area, and a far axis area to focus the light to form light spots suitable for a first relatively thin optical disk and a second relatively thick optical disk to form a first light spot having an FWHM (full width at half maximum) of 0.72 &#x3bc;m or less for the first optical disk and a second light spot having an FWHM of 0.8 &#x3bc;m or more for the second optical disk, an optical path changer to change a proceeding path of incident light, and a photodetector to receive light reflected by the optical disk and having passed through the objective lens and the optical path changer and to detect an information signal and/or an error signal.

Compatible optical pickup device using a single light source

An optical pickup capable of compatibly adopting disks of different formats which are placed in an optical player includes a first optical source for emitting light having a predetermined wavelength, a second optical source for emitting light having a wavelength different from that of light emitted from the first optical source, an objective lens for focusing light emitted from the respective first and second optical sources on a recording medium placed in the optical player, a light path changing unit disposed on a light path between the first and second optical sources and the objective lens for changing the traveling path of incident light, a first optical detector for receiving light emitted from the first optical source and is incident via the recording medium and the light path changing unit, and a second optical detector for receiving light emitted from the second optical source and is incident via the recording medium and the light path changing unit.
