A golf ball a core, one or more intermediate layers, and one or more cover layers. The core may comprise an inner portion and an outer portion. One or more layers of the golf ball may be formed by the application of ultrasonic welding on two half shells to form. One or more of the layers may be formed by a number of different chemical compositions, and may have varying thicknesses, hardnesses, coefficients of restitution, and PGA compression. The golf ball itself may have varying coefficient of restitution and PGA compression, depending on the layers.

Method of golf ball manufacture employing ultrasonic welding, and resulting golf ball and golf ball components and/or layers

A method of producing a golf ball applies ultrasonic welding on two half shells to form at least one intermediate layer, at least one cover layer, or at least one intermediate layer and at least one cover layer. The ultrasonic welding may include pressing the two half shells together, delivering a high power electrical signal to a welding stack, and converting the high power electrical signal at the welding stack to ultrasonic energy. The converting may include converting the high power electrical signal into a mechanical vibration, modifying an amplitude of the mechanical vibration to generate a modified mechanical vibration, and applying the modified mechanical vibration to an interface of the two half shells to weld them together ultrasonically. Aspects also relate to golf balls, or one or more layers thereof, made using ultrasonic welding.

A method of forming a golf ball construct includes positioning one or more core or mantle portions of a golf ball into respective cavities of a mold system so that the core or mantle portion is substantially centered relative to the respective cavity, delivering injection material into the respective cavities, the injection material being at a first temperature and comprising one or more crosslinking resins, heating the injection material within the respective cavities to a second temperature to crosslink the one or more crosslinking resins, and removing from respective mold cavities the one or more golf ball constructs that are formed by heating the injection material to the second temperature.

Mold base for curing parts for golf ball applications

A golf ball that includes (a) a core comprising a center; (b) an outer cover layer; and (c) one or more intermediate layers; wherein at least one of the core or the intermediate layer comprises a composition that includes (i) at least one polyalkenamer and at least one ionomer. A method for making a golf ball comprising a core, one or more intermediate layers and an outer cover layer is also disclosed, wherein the method includes forming a blend comprising at least one polyalkenamer rubber and at least one ionomer; and injection molding the blend into a spherical mold to form the intermediate or outer cover layer.

Polyalkenamer compositions and golf balls prepared therefrom

Golf balls and systems for applying one or more polymer layers to a golf ball construct are disclosed. As but one example of disclosed systems, a method of forming a golf ball construct includes positioning a core or mantle portion of a golf ball in a cavity, opening a valve gate adjacent the cavity to cause viscous polymer to flow through the valve gate, into a short runner and into one or more radial runners that at least partially surround a circumference of the cavity. The polymer layer is allowed to solidify to form a solidified polymer layer, and the golf ball construct is removed from the mold cavity.

The present invention also relates to a crosslinked polyamide composition which is the reaction product of about 70 to about 99.5 wt % (based on the combined weight of Components A and B) of one or more polyamides and about 0.5 to about 30 wt % (based on the combined weight of Components A and B) of one or more crosslinking agents; and where the crosslinked polyamide composition has a flexural modulus of about 5 to about 500 kpsi, and a material Shore D hardness of about 25 to about 85. The present invention also relates to a golf ball having a core including a center, an outer cover layer, and one or more intermediate layers, where at least one or more of the core, outer cover layer or one or more intermediate layers includes the crosslinked polyamide composition.

Golf ball compositions

A golf ball including a core comprising a center; an outer cover layer; and one or more intermediate layers, wherein at least one of the core, the outer cover layer, or the intermediate layer comprises a composition that includes at least one specialty propylene elastomer. The specialty propylene elastomer is preferably present in the outer cover layer and/or the intermediate layer. Also disclosed is a composition that includes at least one ionomer and at least one specialty propylene elastomer, wherein the ionomer is present in an amount of about 95 to about 5 weight percent and the specialty propylene elastomer is present in an amount of about 5 to about 95 weight percent, based on the total weight of all polymers in the composition. The specialty propylene elastomer/ionomer composition can be used to make the outer cover layer and/or the intermediate layer of a golf ball.

Propylene elastomer compositions and golf balls that include such compositions

This invention pertains to a golf ball which includes a core, optionally one or more intermediate layers; and an outer cover layer. The outer cover layer and/or one or more intermediate layers includes a blend of a) about 2 to about 40 wt % (based on the total weight of the blend composition) of an aramid polymer and b) about 60 to about 98 wt % (based on the total weight of the blend composition) of one or more additional polymer components. The blend composition has a melt flow index (MFI) from about 1 to about 80 g/10 min., a material hardness of about 30 to about 90 Shore D, and a flex modulus of about 10 to about 120 kpsi.

Golf ball

This invention pertains to a golf ball which includes a core, optionally one or more intermediate layers; and an outer cover layer. The outer cover layer and/or one or more intermediate layers includes a blend of a) 2 to 60 wt % (based on the total weight of the blend composition) of a cyclic olefin polymer which includes a norbornene-based monomer having the general formula; where Rto Rindependently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a hydrocarbon group and m is from 0 to about 3; and b) about 40 to about 98 wt % (based on the total weight of the blend composition) of one or more additional polymer components. The blend composition has a melt flow index (MFI) from 1 to 80 g/10 min., a material hardness of 30 to 90 Shore D, and a flex modulus of 10 to 120 kpsi.

Golf ball composition

A golf ball is disclosed which includes a Single Component Region which includes greater than 75% by weight of an injection moldable rubber and one or more Discrete Hardness Regions within the Single Component Region. The golf ball may optionally also include a core, an outer cover layer and one or more intermediate layers. Also disclosed are methods of preparing a golf ball including a Single Component Region which includes greater than 75% by weight of an injection moldable rubber and one or more Discrete Hardness Regions within the Single Component Region, whereby the Single Component Region is formed either by sequentially injection molding layers of a polyalkenamer rubber followed by co-curing the resulting structure, or by injection molding one or more pairs of half shells of a polyalkenamer rubber composition, followed by stacking the half shells to form a golf ball precursor structure followed by co-curing the resulting structure.

Injection moldable compositions and golf balls prepared therefrom

Embodiments of the disclosed polymer composition comprise a first unsaturated polymer or polymer precursor, and an effective amount of a peptizer. The peptizer typically comprises a heteroaryl or a heterocyclic compound, other than morpholine as disclosed in assignee's prior applications. Disclosed polymer compositions are useful for making sports equipment, such as at least one layer of a golf ball, often a core. Because the compositions are useful for making golf balls, materials commonly known for making such golf balls can be used in combination with the polymer composition. A method for forming a golf ball also is disclosed. The method comprises providing disclosed compositions and then forming at least one component of a golf using the composition.
