An ultrasound scanning system adapted for scanning a joint of a limb. The scanning system includes a reservoir with one or more walls that define a reservoir interior to hold a fluid and receive the limb therein. A transducer is disposed within the reservoir interior and has ultrasound emitters and receivers. The transducer surrounds the joint within the reservoir interior. A transducer positioning system is disposed outside of the reservoir and includes an actuator to move a transducer carriage along a guide. The transducer carriage couples to the transducer across the wall of the reservoir using non-contact coupling. The transducer positioning system moves the transducer carriage along the guide to move the transducer within the reservoir interior. In some implementations, the reservoir includes a distal closure which the limb can extend beyond. The distal closure fits around the limb to create a seal between the limb and the distal closure.

Robotic surgical systems and methods for resection of an anatomy. The system includes a cutting tool, a manipulator configured to move the cutting tool, and a control system. The control system associates a target plane with the anatomy, the target plane delineating a portion of the anatomy to be resected from a portion of the anatomy to remain unresected. The control system controls the manipulator to align the cutting tool to the target plane. The control system controls the manipulator in an automated mode to perform at least one of the following actions: automatically resect along the target plane with the cutting tool, automatically retract the cutting tool along the target plane, and automatically change a pose of the cutting tool on the target plane. The user or control system can pre-assign whether to perform any of the actions in the manual or automated mode.

Selectively automated robotic surgical system

Spinal surgery systems and methods include a manipulator with a robotic arm and an end effector. A navigation system with a localizer tracks a patient and the manipulator. A control system registers, with the navigation system, a desired trajectory for a vertebra of the patient and detects that the end effector is within a predetermined distance to the desired trajectory. In response to the end effector being within the predetermined distance and detection of a user input, the control system autonomously moves the robotic arm to align the end effector to the desired trajectory. The end effector is constrained to the desired trajectory with a line haptic object and can exit the line haptic object in response to being moved along the line haptic object until the end effector reaches an exit point defined relative to the line haptic object.

Robotic spine surgery system and methods

Surgical systems and methods involve a robotic manipulator with a force sensor and a surgical tool that holds a screw. The screw has a known thread geometry. A navigation system tracks a pose of a target anatomy. Controller(s) store the known thread geometry and control the robotic manipulator to maintain the rotational axis on a planned trajectory with respect to the target anatomy based on the tracked pose of the target anatomy. The controller(s) detect, with the force sensor, a force applied by a user. The controller(s) control a rotational rate of the surgical tool to rotate the screw about a rotational axis and an advancement rate of the surgical tool to linearly advance the screw along the planned trajectory. The rotational rate and the advancement rate are based on the force applied by the user and are proportional to the known thread geometry.

A method of robotically evaluating soft tissue characteristics of a joint includes measuring, by a robotic device, information about a joint during a controlled range of motion manipulation of the joint; determining a motion limit of the joint, using the information about the joint measured during the controlled range of motion manipulation of the joint, wherein the motion limit is at least one of a displacement limit or a force limit of the joint; and replicating, using a joint positioner controlled by the robotic device, the controlled range of motion manipulation of the joint while introducing perturbations to the joint, wherein the replicated range of motion manipulation is controlled, at least in part, based on the motion limit. The method further includes using data obtained by the computer-assisted surgery system during the range of motion manipulation with perturbations to characterize the constraints of a soft tissue envelope of the joint.

A method includes controlling a robotic system using a virtual boundary and based on optical tracking of a tracker, detecting a condition in which an optical detection device is occluded from detecting the tracker, and maintaining the virtual boundary if the condition persists for shorter than a predetermined period of time.
