A system, composition, method and kit for removing a detergent, such as an anionic detergent, from an aqueous solution, comprising a salt, a water immiscible alcohol of Formula I:R—OH  (Formula I)where R1 is an optionally substituted, linear, branched or cyclic C4-C12 alkyl; and a water immiscible halocarbon, wherein said halocarbon is miscible with said alcohol of Formula I. The system can be used on aqueous solutions that contain detergents (such as Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS), for example), and any detergent-associated or detergent-bound molecules that may be present in the aqueous solution, to form an aqueous phase and a non-aqueous phase, for effectively removing the detergent and any detergent-associated or detergent-bound molecules, and sequestering them into the non-aqueous phase.

Composition, system and method for removal of detergents from aqueous solutions

Methods, compositions, and kits for stabilizing both human and microbial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) present in complex biological samples, such as feces, are disclosed. In particular, aqueous compositions for stabilizing DNA contained in biological samples at ambient temperature are disclosed, together with associated methods and kits using same. In one aspect, the compositions comprise a chelating agent present at a concentration of at least about 150 mM, and the composition has a pH of at least about 9.5.

Composition and method for stabilizing nucleic acids in biological samples

The present invention provides a composition and method for stabilizing ribonucleic acid (RNA) from biological samples such that the ribonucleic acid within the sample remains stable at room temperature. The composition comprises an anionic detergent and a buffering agent at a pH of about 5 to about 8.2 and is used in methods for extracting and storing ribonucleic acid from the biological sample.

Stabilizing compositions and methods for extraction of ribonucleic acid

A dual purpose tissue fixative is described. The fixative comprises a cross-linking aldehyde, alcohol, a chelating agent and a non-amine buffer. More particularly, the tissue fixative comprises 0.1-2% w/v formaldehyde, 45-90% w/w alcohol, 1-10 mM of a chelating agent and 1-50 mM of a non-nitrogen buffer. The tissue fixative permits the recovery of high molecular weight DNA and RNA from the tissue sample for molecular genetic analysis. The tissue fixative also preserves the morphology and immunogenicity of the tissue allowing for pathology analysis. The tissue fixative is compared to 95% alcohol and a standard fixative as 10% BNF.

Dual purpose tissue fixative

A direct reading detector/dosimeter for neutrons and other high LET radiation is described, comprising a selected, substantially transparent, elastic solid medium uniformly impregnated with droplets of an immiscible detector liquid. The detector liquid-in-solid is appropriately confined and rendered stable for storage by adding a layer of excess detector liquid and sealing in a container. On opening the container and removing the excess detector liquid, the detector liquid droplets become superheated and the detector/dosimeter is activated. Neutrons and other high LET radiation will trigger the vaporization of the superheated droplets and the selected elastic, solid medium will trap the products of vaporization and retain a visual record thereof over an extended time. The number of vaporization events can be counted to give a measure of the radiation dose.
