A method of moving a solvent without electrowetting properties on an electro-wetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) microfluidic device comprises disposing a first droplet of a first fluid having electrowetting properties on a surface of the EWOD microfluidic device; disposing a second droplet of a second fluid without electrowetting properties on the surface; applying a voltage to the surface to move the first droplet towards the second droplet; contacting the first droplet with the second droplet to form a encapsulated droplet, where the second droplet encapsulates the first droplet.

Liquid-based thermoelectric device

A method and system for performing biomolecule extraction are provided that use liquid-to-liquid extraction (LLE) in combination with an electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) device to provide a biomolecule extraction solution that has high extraction efficiency and that is less costly and easier to use than current state of the art methods and systems. The system and method are well suited for, but not limited to, extraction of DNA, RNA and protein molecules.

An electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) microfluidic device comprises at least one integrated electrochemical sensor, the electrochemical sensor comprising: a reference electrode; a sensing electrode; and an analyte-selective layer positioned over the sensing electrode. In some embodiments, the electrochemical sensor measures a concentration of an analyte in a fluid sample exposed to the electrochemical sensor based on a potential difference between the reference electrode and the sensing electrode. The first analyte and the second analyte can be selected from a group consisting of K, Na, Ca, Cl, HCO, Mg, H, Ba, Pb, Cu, I, NH4, (SO4).

An RC filter that is tunable in terms of its cut-off frequency comprising a drop placed on one or more dielectric layers, a conducting layer underneath the dielectric layer, a nonconducting layer underneath the conducting layer, and an external resistor attached to the drop via an electrode, wherein the cut-off frequency of the filter is tuned by changing the shape or composition of the drop and methods of using the filter as a detector.
