Batteries such as Li-ion batteries are provided that comprise anode and cathode electrodes, an electrolyte ionically coupling the anode and the cathode, and a separator electrically separating the anode and the cathode. In some designs, the electrolyte may comprise, for example, a mixture of (i) a Li-ion salt with (ii) at least one other metal salt having a metal with a standard reduction potential below −2.3 V vs. Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE). In other designs, the electrolyte may be disposed in conjunction with an electrolyte solvent that comprises, for example, about 10 to about 100 wt. % ether. In still other designs, the battery may further comprise anode and cathode interfacial layers (e.g., solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)) disposed between the respective electrode and the electrolyte and having different types of fragments of electrolyte solvent molecules as compared to each other.

Complex electrolytes and other compositions for metal-ion batteries

A battery electrode composition is provided comprising core-shell composites. Each of the composites may comprise a core and a multi-functional shell.

Core-shell composites for electrodes in metal-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are provided that variously comprise anode and cathode electrodes, an electrolyte, a separator, and, in some designs, a protective layer. In some designs, at least one of the electrodes may comprise a composite of (i) Li2S and (ii) conductive carbon that is embedded in the core of the composite. In some designs, the protective layer may be disposed on at least one of the electrodes via electrolyte decomposition. Various methods of fabrication for lithium-ion battery electrodes and particles are also provided.

Metal sulfide composite materials for batteries

Batteries such as Li-ion batteries are provided that comprise anode and cathode electrodes, an electrolyte ionically coupling the anode and the cathode, and a separator electrically separating the anode and the cathode. A battery electrode composition is provided comprising core-shell composites. Each of the composites may comprise a sulfur-based core and a multi-functional shell. The sulfur-based core is provided to electrochemically react with metal ions during battery operation to store the metal ions in the form of a corresponding metal-sulfide during discharging or charging of the battery and to release the metal ions from the corresponding metal-sulfide during charging or discharging of the battery. The multi-functional shell at least partially encases the sulfur-based core and is formed from a material that is (i) substantially permeable to the metal ions of the corresponding metal-sulfide and (ii) substantially impermeable to electrolyte solvent molecules and metal polysulfides.

Core-shell composites for sulfur-based cathodes in metal-ion batteries

A fuel cell () includes a cation exchange membrane (), a first anion exchange membrane () and a second anion exchange membrane (). The cation exchange membrane () has a first side and an opposite second side. The first anion exchange membrane () has a first exterior surface and an opposite first interior surface disposed along at least a portion to the first side of the cation exchange membrane (). A catalyst () is embedded along the first exterior surface. The second anion exchange membrane () has a second exterior surface and an opposite second interior surface disposed along at least a portion to the second side of the cation exchange membrane (). A catalyst () is embedded along the second exterior surface. A stack of fuel cells () include a first fuel cell () with an acidic first anode () that is electrically coupled to an alkaline second cathode () of a second fuel cell ().
