In one implementation a computer-implemented method includes generating a group of telephone contacts for a first user, wherein the generating includes identifying a second user as a contact of the first user based upon a determination that the second user has at least a threshold email-based association with the first user; and adding the identified second user to the group of telephone contacts for the first user. The method further includes receiving a first request to connect a first telephone device associated with the first user to a second telephone device associated with the second user. The method also includes identifying a contact identifier of the second telephone device using the generated group of telephone contacts for the first user, and initiating a connection between the first telephone device and the second telephone device using the identified contact identifier.

A processor performs a first pass speech recognition technique on the spoken input and forms first pass results. The first pass results include a number of alternative speech expressions, each having an assigned score related to the certainty that the corresponding expression correctly matches the spoken input. The processor selectively performs a second pass speech recognition technique on the spoken input according to the first pass results. Preferably, the second pass attempts to correctly match the spoken input to only those expressions which were identified during the first pass. Otherwise, if one of the expressions identified by the first pass is assigned a score higher than a predetermined threshold (e.g., 95%), the second pass is not performed. Because the second pass is performed only when necessary, the invention recognizes speech with a faster average speed for a given accuracy in comparison to prior systems.

Alternately, the first pass results identify a characteristic of the spoken input. The characteristic can be the gender of the speaker or a type of telephone the speaker is calling from. In which case, the second pass speech recognition technique is selected from a plurality of speech recognition techniques according to the characteristic identified by the first pass. Because the selected second pass technique is specific to the characteristic of the spoken input, the second pass technique can perform speech recognition faster for a given accuracy than a technique which is not specific.

Adaptive multi-pass speech recognition system

A technique for adaptation of a speech recognizing system across multiple remote communication sessions with a speaker. The speaker can be a telephone caller. An acoustic model is utilized for recognizing the speaker's speech. Upon initiation of a first remote session with the speaker, the acoustic model is speaker-independent. During the first session, the speaker is uniquely identified and speech samples are obtained from the speaker. In the preferred embodiment, the samples are obtained without requiring the speaker to engage in a training session. The acoustic model is then modified based upon the samples thereby forming a modified model. The model can be modified during the session or after the session is terminated. Upon termination of the session, the modified model is then stored in association with an identification of the speaker. During a subsequent remote session, the speaker is identified and, then, the modified acoustic model is utilized to recognize the speaker's speech. Additional speech samples are obtained during the subsequent session and, then, utilized to further modify the acoustic model. In this manner, an acoustic model utilized for recognizing the speech of a particular speaker is cumulatively modified according to speech samples obtained during multiple sessions with the speaker. As a result, the accuracy of the speech recognizing system improves for the speaker even when the speaker only engages in relatively short remote sessions.

Method and system for dynamically improving performance of speech recognition or other speech processing systems

A technique for recognizing telephone numbers and other information embedded in voice messages stored in a telephone voice messaging system. A voice recognition system is coupled to the telephone voice messaging system. A voice message stored in the voice messaging system is transferred to the voice recognition system. The voice recognition system segments the voice message and then searches the segments for a predetermined speech reference model (grammar) which is expected to contain information of importance to the recipient of the message. In a preferred embodiment, the predetermined is a numeric grammar which specifies a sequence of numbers occurring in the voice message. In alternate embodiments, the grammar specifies a date, a time, an address, and so forth, and can specify more than one such type of information. The grammar can be modified or selected by the recipient of the voice message so that the voice recognition system searches for information of particular interest to the recipient. Once the predetermined grammar is identified, the voice recognition system outputs a portion of the stored voice message which includes the grammar. The output can be a display of the information contained in the grammar, such as a telephone number or an address. Alternately, the output can be an audible replay of the portion of the stored voice message which includes the grammar.

Technique for recognizing telephone numbers and other spoken information embedded in voice messages stored in a voice messaging system

In accordance with the invention, a speech recognizer is provided which uses a computationally-feasible method for constructing a set of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) for speech recognition that utilize a partial and optimal degree of mixture tying. With partially-tied HMMs, improved recognition accuracy of a large vocabulary word corpus as compared to systems that use fully-tied HMMs is achieved with less computational overhead than with a fully untied system. The computationally-feasible technique comprises the steps of determining a cluster of HMM states that share Gaussian components which are close together, developing a subset codebook for those clusters, and recalculating the Gaussians in the codebook to best estimate the clustered states.

Method and apparatus for speech recognition using optimized partial

An automatic speech recognition methodology, wherein words are modeled as probabilistic networks of allophones, collects nodes in the probabilistic network into equivalence classes when those nodes have the same allophonic choices governed by the same phonological rules. The allophonic choices allow for representation of dialectic pronunciation variations between different speakers. Training data is shared among nodes in an equivalence class so that accurate pronunciation probabilities may be determined even for words for which there is only a limited amount of training data. A method is used to determine probabilities for each of a multitude of pronunciation models for each word in the vocabulary, based on automatic extraction of linguistic knowledge from sets of phonological rules, in order to robustly and accurately model dialectal variation.

Method for recognizing speech using linguistically-motivated hidden

An automatic speech recognition methodology takes advantage of linguistic constraints wherein words are modeled as probabilistic networks of phonetic segments (herein phones), and each phone is represented as a context-independent hidden Markov phone model mixed with a number of context-dependent phone models. Recognition is based on use of methods to design phonological rule sets based on measures of coverage and overgeneration of pronunciations which achieves high coverage of pronunciations with compact representations. Further, a method estimates probabilities of the different possible pronunciations of words. A further method models cross-word coarticulatory effects. In a specific embodiment of the system, a specific method determines the single most-likely pronunciation of words. In further specific embodiments of the system, methods generate speaker-dependent pronunciation networks.
