Method and system for interfacing with a peripheral device is provided. A microcontroller of the peripheral device is used to respond to a standard request for basic device information from a computing system. When the request for basic device information is received, the microcontroller reads the basic device information from a general purpose memory instead of a dedicated memory. The microcontroller emulates a memory controller by formatting the information and then sending a response to the computing system in a standard, expected format.

Method and system for collecting device information

Method and system for executing instructions out of a non-volatile memory that may have defective blocks is provided. During an initialization process, a processor reads operating system instructions from the non-volatile memory that may have defective blocks. While reading the operating system instructions, the processor expects a valid signature at a known offset. If the processor does not receive a valid signature at the expected offset, the processor continues to search for a valid signature for X more blocks after the offset. The X blocks are the number of defective blocks in a memory partition where the operating system instructions are stored.

Method and system for initializing a computing system

A system and method are described for aggregating management of devices connected to a server. In one embodiment, devices connected to a server may be identified by an operating system of the server. The devices may be in communication with one another through a network. The operating system may communicate a network identifier of each device to a service processor of the server. The service processor may aggregately manage the devices independent from the operating system. The service processor may receive management commands from an external source. Each of the management commands may be associated with one of the connected devices, but the connected devices may be incapable of communicating directly with the external source. The service processor may communicate each management command to the device associated with the management command using the network identifier of the associated device. The management command can then be performed on the associated device.

System and method for aggregating management of devices connected to a server

An IBM PC compatible processing system typically has a BIOS installed as system firmware. During a boot process of the processing system, the BIOS loads a boot loader from one of the boot media, i.e., hard drives, floppy disks, CDs, USB flash memories, taps, etc. and passes control of the boot loader, the boot loader then loads an OS from the boot media. The present invention takes advantage of the higher reliability and availability provided by the system flash memory and stores a boot loader as system firmware in the system flash memory. Further, it provides changes in the BIOS boot process to load the boot loader from system memory, the ROM, for example, without relying on boot media. With this new process, the boot loader can be loaded even when the boot media is corrupt, defective or un-initialized.
