Managing power feeds includes monitoring a waveform of a high-voltage power feed supplied to an electrical load to detect potential interruption of the high-voltage power feed and switching to another power feed to supply power to the electrical load in response to identifying the waveform pattern. Monitoring a waveform includes processing the waveform to determine if one or more waveform patterns are present in the waveform. A waveform pattern indicates, by its presence in a waveform of a power feed, a power event associated with the power feed, and some waveform patterns indicate potential interruption of the power feed. Switching to another power feed in response to determining potential interruption of the power feed based on waveform monitoring enables an uninterrupted power supply.

System and method for managing power feeds through waveform monitoring

A line isolating power connector can include a housing for connecting with a power cable and a power source, and wires positioned through the housing that include at least a line wire and a neutral wire. The housing is separated by an aperture into a line conduit and a neutral conduit, and the aperture is sized to receive a portion of a contactless power quality probe such that the power quality probe can be connected around the first line conduit or neutral conduit in order to measure power quality in either the line wire or the neutral wire.

A system for performing computing operations in a data center includes one or more sets of computer systems, one or more primary power systems, and a reserve power system. The primary power systems include a downstream portion that supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems. The reserve power system includes switches that switch between supplying a primary power feed and a reserve power feed from the reserve power system through part of the primary power system. An input resiliency switch can switch between supplying primary power or reserve power to support power supplied to the sets of computer systems through the primary power system based upon a primary power feed fault. A power distribution switch can switch between supplying primary power and reserve power to part of the downstream portion of the primary power system to bypass an upstream portion of the primary power system.

Techniques for detecting a cause or a location associated with a power disturbance affecting a power distribution system are described. For example, an indication of such a power disturbance may be received from a power meter of the power distribution system. Power-related data may also be received from another power meter of the power distribution system based on the indication of the power disturbance. A cause or a location associated with the power disturbance may be determined based on the power-related data received from the other power meter.

Detecting power disturbances based on networked power meters

A high-voltage energy storage system (ESS) device is coupled to a feed from a utility power source to a transformer that steps down high-voltage power and feeds one or more loads in a data center. The high-voltage ESS device can store electrical power from the utility power source and discharge stored electrical power. An energy control system monitors waveforms associated with utility power sources and determines whether a waveform indicates a potential loss of electrical power. The energy control system also monitors costs of receiving electrical power from utility power sources and determines whether the costs associated with receiving utility power from particular utility power sources exceed one or more thresholds. The energy control system can command a switching device assembly to selectively route high-voltage power from a utility power source or from the high-voltage ESS device to the transformer based on a waveform determination or a cost reduction determination.

An energy storage system (ESS) provides redundant power feed support to a power system which provides secondary power support to a set of electrical loads, independently of a power system which provides primary power support. The power inlet connection of the power system can be switched between a utility power feed and a discharge feed from the ESS based on determinations regarding whether the utility feed is interrupted. The ESS and the power system can each be coupled to the utility power feed via separate breaker-supported power line connections, which themselves can be coupled via a breaker-supported branch circuit downstream of the power line connection breakers. The branch circuit breaker can be closed, to switch the power inlet connection from the utility power feed to the ESS, based at least in part upon a determination of a voltage difference across the branch circuit breaker.

Redundant secondary power support system

Techniques are described for providing an automatic transfer switch (ATS), such as in a data center, to determine whether the power system coupled to a first power input on the ATS is the same power system or a different power system that is coupled to a second power input on the ATS. The ATS determines and compares the electrical characteristics (e.g., voltage, current harmonics, etc.) to determine if there is a difference between the determined characteristics. If the electrical characteristics are substantially similar, then a single power system is coupled to both power inputs on the ATS. But if the electrical characteristics are significantly different (e.g., the difference in the electrical characteristics is above a threshold), the power system coupled to one power input on the ATS is different from the power system coupled to the other power input on the ATS.

Detecting misconfigured power sources for a device

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) includes power quality conditioners to condition electrical power fed to a power output of the automatic transfer switch. In some embodiments, the power quality conditioners include a surge protection circuit or a filter circuit. In some embodiments, the automatic transfer switch includes a battery module configured to supply electrical power to the power output of the ATS during a power disruption event.

Managing power feeds through waveform monitoring

A reserve power bus ring links multiple reserve power systems to computer systems in a data center. The reserve power bus ring enables multiple reserve power systems to concurrently provide reserve power support to sets of computer systems. The reserve power bus ring includes portions to which one or more reserve power systems and computer systems are coupled, and isolation devices collectively isolate particular portions of the reserve power bus ring in response to a fault condition in that particular portion, such that that computer systems on other portions of the ring continue to receive reserve power support from the reserve power systems coupled to the remaining portions. A reserve power bus ring may include respective power buses coupling two or more reserve power systems on an upstream side and a downstream side, and isolation devices can break a connection of the power bars to isolate the reserve power systems.
