A dual-mode augmented/virtual reality near-eye wearable display for use with a curved lens element. The lenses are provided with one or more transparent waveguide elements that are disposed within the thickness of the lenses. The waveguide elements are configured to couple display images directly from image sources such as emissive display imagers to an exit aperture or plurality of exit aperture sub-regions within a viewer's field of view. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of image sources are disposed on the peripheral surface of the lenses whereby each image source has a dedicated input image aperture and exit aperture sub-region that are each 'piecewise flat' and have matched areas and angles of divergence whereby a viewer is presented with the output of the plurality of image source images within the viewer's field of view.

Dual-mode augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) near-eye wearable displays

Emissive micro-pixel spatial light modulators with non-telecentric emission are introduced. The individual light emission from each multi-color micro-scale emissive pixel is directionally modulated in a unique direction to enable application-specific non-telecentric emission pattern from the micro-pixel array of the emissive spatial light modulator. Design methods for directionally modulating the light emission of the individual micro-pixels using micro-pixel level optics are described. Monolithic wafer level optics methods for fabricating the micro-pixel level optics are also described. An emissive multi-color micro-pixel spatial light modulator with non-telecentric emission is used to exemplify the methods and possible applications of the present invention: ultra-compact image projector, minimal cross-talk 3D light field display, multi-view 2D display, and directionally modulated waveguide optics for see-through near-eye displays.

Non-telecentric emissive micro-pixel array light modulators and methods for making the same

A multilayer light emitting device having a plurality of low Si&#x2014;H bonding dielectric layers is disclosed for improved p-GaN contact performance. Improved p-side contact resistance is provided using one or more bonding, via or passivation layers in a multilayer light emitting structure by the use of processes and dielectric materials and precursors that provide dielectric layers with a hydrogen content of less than 13 at. %.

III-V light emitting device having low Si&#x2014;H bonding dielectric layers for improved P-side contact performance

A near eye display system having an image display panel, a prism assembly comprising a first and second element and a structure such as a eye wear glasses frame. The front and rear surfaces of the first and second elements are aligned and bonded to form the prism assembly. A partially-reflective coating is applied to the interface of the first and second elements to define a beam-splitter interface. The image display panel is disposed near an upper optical region such as a refracting surface of the first element. The lower edge of the second element opposite the beam-splitter interface is a coated reflective surface mirror. The display panel, the optical region and the optically reflective surface are configured to provide compactness and to avoid the break of symmetry. The system accommodates large inter pupil distance (IPD) variation and left/right eye scanning motion.

A III-V light emitting device with pixels (mesa regions) specifically designed to enable lower cost through layer vias is disclosed for reduced cost of manufacture of the device. Reduction of cost of manufacture is achieved by having non-uniform width trench regions formed during pixel etch for the multi-pixel array part of the device. Through-layer vias are specifically formed in the wider part of the trench regions using cheaper lithography toolset enabled by the larger via critical dimension achievable in the wider part of the trench regions (as compared to narrow part of the trench regions). Larger via critical dimension enables improved electrical (and consequently optical) performance of the device due to better overlay control as well as lower via resistance.

Methods and systems for light field image encoding and decoding are disclosed. According to some embodiments, scene metadata and input light field images associated with a scene are received. A first encoding operation is performed on the scene metadata and input light field images to generate reference images, reference disparity information, and an order of reference views. A second encoding operation is performed based on the reference images and reference disparity information to output light field encoded data. The light field encoded data includes the encoded reference images, the encoded reference disparity information, and the order of reference views. The light field encoded data is transmitted.

Disclosed herein are multi-layered optically active regions for semiconductor light-emitting devices (LEDs) that incorporate intermediate carrier blocking layers, the intermediate carrier blocking layers having design parameters for compositions and doping levels selected to provide efficient control over the carrier injection distribution across the active regions to achieve desired device injection characteristics. A method for growing on a substrate strongly aligned uniform cross-section semiconductor composite nanocolumns is disclosed. The method includes: (a) forming faceted pyramidal pits on the substrate surface; (b) initiating nucleation on the facets of the pits; and; (c) promoting the growth of nuclei toward the center of the pits where they coalesce with twinning and grow afterwards together as composite nanocolumns. Multi-quantum-well, core-shell nanocolumn heterostructures can be grown on the sidewalls of the nanocolumns. Furthermore, a continuous semiconductor epitaxial layer can be formed through the overgrowth of the nanocolumns to facilitate fabrication of high-quality planar device structures or for light emitting structures.

Methods for producing composite GaN nanocolumns and light emitting structures made from the methods

An emissive Solid State Imager (SSI) comprised of a spatial array of digitally addressable multicolor micro pixels. Each pixel is a micro optical cavity comprising multiple photonic layers of blue-violet semiconductor light emitting diode. One of the photonic layers is used to generate light at the blue primary of the SSI. Two of the photonic layers are used to generate violet-blue excitation light which is converted with associated nanophosphors layer into the green and the red primaries of the SSI. The light generated is emitted perpendicular to the plane of the imager device via a plurality of vertical optical waveguides that extract and collimate the light generated. Each pixel diode is individually addressable to enable the pixel to simultaneously emit any combination of the colors associated with its multicolor nanophosphors converted semiconductor light emitting diode at any required on/off duty cycle for each color.

Methods and systems for light field image encoding and decoding are disclosed. According to some embodiments, the method receives scene metadata and input light field images associated with a scene. The method further performs a first encoding operation on the scene metadata and the input light field images to generate reference views and reference disparity information. The method further performs a second encoding operation based on the reference views, the reference disparity information, and synthesized residuals to output encoded light field data, where the encoded light field data comprises encoded reference views, encoded reference disparity information, and encoded synthesized residuals. The method further randomly accesses and selects a group of reference views and corresponding disparity information from the encoded light field data based on one or more selected regions of interest. And the method transmits the selected group of reference views, the selected corresponding disparity information, and the encoded synthesized residuals.
