A method for on-demand management of Internet Protocol (IP) address pools includes allocating an unused IP address from a local IP address pool designated for a remote domain if a request to connect to the remote domain is received and deallocating an IP address if the IP address is released. The local IP address pool includes at least one subnet dynamically assigned from a global IP address pool. Each of the subnets specifies a contiguous set of one or more IP addresses. IP addresses are allocated using a first-assigned-subnet-first policy, wherein an IP address is allocated from a least recently assigned subnet having at least one unallocated IP address. According to one aspect, subnets are deassigned using a last-assigned-subnet-first policy, wherein the deassigned subnet is the most recently assigned subnet having no allocated IP addresses.

Resource allocation and reclamation for on-demand address pools

A method and apparatus for inter-domain routing of calls in a network, where the network represents a first wide area network. A routing node of the network advertises its access to a range of addresses in a second wide area network and a cost for access to the range of addresses to all adjacent nodes in the network. Each of the adjacent nodes inserts an entry in its own routing table associating access to the range of addresses in the second wide area network with the network address of the routing node and the cost for access. Each adjacent node then modifies the cost for access by adding its own cost and advertises its access to the range of addresses in the second wide area network and the modified cost for access to all of its adjacent nodes. When a call addressed to a destination address in the range of address in the second wide area network is received at each node of the network, then the node searches for the entry in its routing table corresponding to the range of addresses in the second wide area network having the lowest cost for access and connects the call to the adjacent node associated with the entry having the lowest cost. The routing node can also advertise one or more protocol types which it can support, where the protocol types are associated with the routing node in the routing table in each adjacent node and a call having a given protocol type is also routed at each node of the network based upon its protocol type.

Method and apparatus for automatic inter-domain routing of calls

Devices, softwares and methods can establish an IP connection with each other through a network. Dynamic connection attributes of the called device are inferred locally by the calling device. These may include any one or more of type of codec, bandwidth, port number, and so on. A rule may be used for inference, expecting that the called device uses the same rule. Setup takes place without the calling device receiving this information explicitly by signaling. Plus setup may take place even though expected handshake signals might not be transmitted at all, due to differences in implementation, or even a difference in protocols.

The method also includes apportioning one or more of the at least one subnet between the global IP address pool and the local IP address pool based upon utilization of the local IP address pool. The local IP address pool includes one or more of at least one subnet obtained from a global IP address pool and each subnet specifies a contiguous set of one or more IP addresses.

On-demand address pools

A method for providing virtual private networks for voice over data network users. A location server is provided that has more than one routing information database. A virtual private network is defined within that location server for each of the routing information databases. As registration information from gateways is received, they are associated with the appropriate virtual private network.
