Instrumented drill bit

Methods and systems are disclosed that use a temperature sensor integral to a drill bit during drilling. The temperature sensor is configured to measure temperature associated with a cutting element of the drill bit over time during drilling. The temperature sensor is used to generate temperature data representing temperature of the cutting element of the drill bit over time during drilling. The temperature data is processed to determine and monitor at least one condition of the wellbore and/or the drill bit during drilling, such as i) detection of faults or openings or cracks or other geological rock features of the wellbore being drilled, ii) estimation of one or more drilling parameters of the drill bit (such as rate of penetration (ROP), iii) detection of lost cutting element(s), iv) detection of bit balling, and v) detection of drilling efficiency.

Temperature measurement at one or more cutting elements of a drill bit

A method of detecting wear of a downhole tool implemented in a subject wellbore includes receiving offset wellbore data for one or more offset wellbores and, based on the offset wellbore data, determining an expected downhole tool index for the downhole tool at one or more measurement depths including an active measurement depth of the subject wellbore. The method further includes receiving subject wellbore data and, based on the subject wellbore data, determining a subject downhole tool index in real time for the downhole tool at the active measurement depth. The method further includes determining the wear of the downhole tool based on comparing the subject downhole tool index to the expected downhole tool index at the active measurement depth in real time.

Systems and methods for determining wear of downhole tools

A stabilizer can include an outer collar, an inner sleeve, and a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is changeable between a first mode in which the outer collar is rotationally fixed to the inner sleeve and a second mode in which the outer collar is rotationally isolated relative to the inner sleeve. The stabilizer may include an active or passive system for changing modes. An example passive device may include a magnetic clutch where the detected force overcomes magnetic forces to change mode. The stabilizer can be used to mitigate whirl on a rotating device by switching the rotating device between a rotating mode and a non-rotating mode. In the rotating mode, outer collar may rotate with the inner sleeve. In the non-rotating mode, the outer collar may be rotationally isolated from the inner sleeve.

Anti-whirl stabilization tools

A method of mitigating whirl on a rotating device includes detecting force on a outer surface of the rotating device and switching the rotating device between a rotating mode and a non-rotating mode. In the rotating mode, the outer surface may rotate with an inner sleeve. In the non-rotating mode, the outer surface may be rotationally isolated from the inner sleeve. The rotating device may include a stabilizer with an active or passive system for switching modes. The stabilizer can include an outer collar, an inner sleeve, and a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is changeable between a first mode in which the outer collar is rotationally fixed to the inner sleeve and a second mode in which the outer collar is rotationally isolated relative to the inner sleeve. Methods for mitigating whirl

A drilling system that includes a drill bit that drills a bore through rock. A shaft coupled to the drill bit, wherein the shaft transfers rotational power to the drill bit. A housing that receives at least part of the shaft. A rotary steering system that controls a drilling direction of the drill bit. The rotary steering system includes a steering sleeve that couples to and uncouples from the housing to control a drilling direction of the drill bit.
