A coating composition which is capable of crosslinking at ambient and elevated temperatures which includes a polymerized monomer having the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1-5 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen or a methyl group; --X-- is a bond, --O-- or --NH--; Ar is unsubstituted arylene; n is 0-10 and m is 1 or 2; wherein when X is O or NH, n is at least 1. A process for preparing the composition suspensions is also presented. The coating composition is useful in coatings, inks, overprint, varnish and surface treatment applications.

A novel compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1-5 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen or a methyl group, X is nonexistent, O or --NH--, Ar is unsubstituted arylene, n is 0-10 and m is 1 or 2, wherein when X is O or --NH--, n is at least 1. The compound of this invention is useful as a monomer which can be polymerized and/or copolymerized by both free radical and cationic polymerization. Polymers and copolymers produced in this invention can be crosslinked and are useful in coatings, inks, overprint, varnish and surface treatment applications.

Oxazoline or oxazine methacrylate aqueous coating compositions

A novel thermosettable composition-of-matter is disclosed. One embodiment of the composition-of-matter includes a polymeric thermosettable ingredient having at least three acetoacetoxy-type functional pendant moieties as well as at least three acid-functional pendant moieties. Another embodiment of the composition-of-matter includes at least two polymeric thermosettable ingredients, one of which includes at least three acid-functional pendant moieties and the other of which includes at least three acetoacetoxy-type functional pendant moieties. The novel composition is characterized in that the acid-functional and acetoacetoxy-type functional pendant moieties crosslinkably-react together, when subjected to elevated-temperature conditions for a predetermined period of time, thereby producing a crosslinked polymeric network. The novel thermosettable composition-of-matter can be used 'as is' if either of the polymeric thermosettable components is a 'fluid' (i.e., is able to flow) at room temperature. Otherwise, the novel thermosettable composition-of-matter may be formulated into a solvent-borne coating composition, a water-borne coating composition, or a powder coating composition.

A novel polyester is provided which is capable of forming an anisotropic melt and which, subsequent to being formed into shaped articles, is capable of crosslinking to render the article highly heat stable. The polyester preferably consists of approximately 1 to 40 mole percent of 3-allyl-4-oxybenzoyl and/or 3-methylallyl-4-oxybenzoyl moieties copolymerized with oxyaroyl moieties and/or dioxaryl and dicarboxyaryl moieties. The process comprises heating a monomer mixture of allylically substituted hydroxybenzoic acid and aromatic hydroxy acids and/or aromatic diols and diacids to prepare the polyester; melt processing the polyester to form a solid shaped article; and heating to substantially crosslink the allylic groups while substantially retaining the configuration of the solid shaped article.
