Methods are provided for emissions control of a vehicle. In one example, a catalyst may include a cerium-based support material and a transition metal catalyst loaded on the support material, the transition metal catalyst including nickel and copper, wherein nickel in the transition metal catalyst is included in a monatomic layer loaded on the support material. In some examples, limiting nickel to the monatomic layer may mitigate extensive transition metal catalyst degradation ascribed to sintering of thicker nickel washcoat layers. Further, by utilizing the cerium-based support material, side reactions involving nickel in the transition metal catalyst with other support materials may be prevented.

Methods and systems are provided for emissions control of a vehicle. Methods and systems are provided for a multicomponent aftertreatment device arranged in a vehicle exhaust gas passage. In one example, a system may include an oxygen storage catalyst and an underbody trap catalyst comprising metal modified zeolite, the oxygen storage catalyst arranged upstream of the underbody trap catalyst in an exhaust passage of the vehicle.

A hydrocarbon trap catalyst and method of forming the same are disclosed. The method may include introducing copper into a zeolite at 10% to 75% of an ion-exchange level of the zeolite, introducing at least one of nickel and manganese into a zeolite at 50% to 100% total of an ion-exchange level of the zeolite, and applying a three-way catalyst layer. The copper and nickel and/or manganese may be introduced into a single zeolite or the copper may be introduced into a first zeolite layer and the nickel and/or manganese may be introduced into a second zeolite layer. If copper and another metal are introduced into the same zeolite, copper may be introduced first. The disclosed trap catalyst may increase the release temperature of hydrocarbons such as ethanol, propylene and toluene, and thus reduce vehicle cold start tailpipe emissions.

Use of transition metals to reduce cold start emissions

Phosphorus tolerant or resistant three-way catalysts (TWC) are disclosed. The TWC may include a substrate defining a plurality of channels. It may include front and rear washcoat portions overlying the substrate and having respective first and second washcoat loadings, the first washcoat loading being at most 2.0 g/inand less than the second washcoat loading. The front washcoat portion may include a catalyst material supported on a support material comprising a cerium oxide, such as ceria or CZO, or a pre-phosphated material, such as AlPO, or CePO. In one embodiment, the support material may comprise at least 85 wt. % of a cerium oxide or at least 85 wt. % of a phosphate-containing material. The front portion and the underlying substrate may comprise from 3 to 25 vol. % of the three-way catalyst or the front portion may overly up to an initial 15% of an axial length of the substrate.

A catalyst system for reducing NO emissions in the exhaust system of a vehicle is provided and comprises a support in communication with the exhaust gas stream, with the support including an exhaust gas inlet and an exhaust gas outlet. The support has at least one exhaust gas passage therethrough. The support, which may be in the form of a monolithic, multi-cell honeycomb construction, comprises a first catalytic zone and a second catalytic zone positioned downstream from the first zone. The first catalytic zone includes rhodium or a rhodium-enriched catalyst, while the second catalytic zone includes palladium or a palladium-enriched catalyst.

A particulate filter for use in a vehicle engine exhaust is provided which includes a catalyst containing a mixture of nickel and copper. The catalyst is impregnated into the filter substrate, which is non-reactive with nickel and copper. When used in a vehicle exhaust gas treatment system, the catalyst on the filter improves soot burn-off at low temperatures, provides improved efficiency in reducing CO and NOemissions over the use of conventional three-way-catalyst washcoats, and provides enhanced oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and water-gas-shift (WGS) functions.

A three-way catalyst including a mixture of nickel and copper is provided for reducing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon emissions, and nitrogen oxides from vehicle engine exhausts. A method for treating engine exhaust. The method includes contacting an NOx exhaust with an upstream catalyst material coated onto a substrate and including copper or iron loaded in a first zeolite at an upstream loading of 0 to 3.5 g/l to convert the NOx exhaust in a first temperature range of 150&#xb0; C. to 500&#xb0; C. to a first NOx converted exhaust. The method further includes contacting the first NOx converted exhaust with a downstream catalyst material coated onto the substrate downstream of the upstream catalyst material and including copper or iron loaded in a second zeolite at a downstream loading of 1.5 to 9.5 g/l to convert the first NOx converted exhaust in a second temperature range of 450&#xb0; C. to 700&#xb0; C.

Methods for treating engine exhaust

According to one aspect of the present invention, a catalyst assembly is provided for treating an exhaust from an engine. In one embodiment, the catalyst assembly includes a first catalyst material catalytically active at a first temperature and loaded at a first catalyst material loading, the first catalyst material including a first base metal loading, and a second catalyst material catalytically active at a second temperature lower than the first temperature and loaded at a second catalyst material loading, the second catalyst material including a second base metal loading, wherein the second base metal loading is higher than the first base metal loading.

A hydrocarbon trap is provided for reducing cold-start hydrocarbon emissions. The trap contains an acidic absorption material for improving absorption of low molecular weight hydrocarbons. The acidic absorption materials may be used either alone or in combination with zeolites which are integrated into and/or supported on a monolithic substrate. The hydrocarbon trap may be positioned in the exhaust gas passage of a vehicle such that hydrocarbons are adsorbed on the trap and stored until the engine and exhaust reach a sufficient temperature for desorption.

A nickel-based catalyst is provided for reducing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon emissions, and nitrogen oxides from vehicle exhausts. The catalyst is impregnated directly onto a carrier which is non-reactive with nickel. The nickel is contained on said carrier at a loading of between about 2 to about 20 wt %. When used in a vehicle exhaust gas treatment system, the catalyst provides improved efficiency in reducing CO, HC, and NOemissions over the use of conventional three-way-catalysts.
