The present invention relates to a method for assigning transmission resources () to communications between an access node () and a plurality of subscriber devices (to) coupled to a shared transmission medium. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the method comprises characterizing interference between respective ones of the plurality of subscriber devices over the shared transmission medium, grouping highly-interfering subscriber devices into respective interfering groups (GGGG) based on the so-characterized interference, and assigning disjoint transmission time intervals to upstream communication from any one subscriber device of any one interfering group and to downstream communication towards any other subscriber device of the same interfering group. Full-duplex communication over a shared transmission medium

Various embodiments of an optical transmitter and a method of operating an optical transmitter are disclosed. In one embodiment, the optical transmitter includes a laser and a laser driver configured to drive the laser using either a voltage driving topology (CDT) or a current-driving topology (VDT). A manner of processing bit-interleaved data traffic in a communication network. In the increasingly-common scenario where data traffic is bit interleaved and scrambled using a PRBS (pseudo-random binary sequence) before it is transmitted from a sender to a receiver, the receiver is configured to receive the transmitted bit stream and decimate it, that is, remove the bits of the bit stream that are allocated for the receiver, prior to descrambling. To accomplish this, the receiver employs an LFSR (linear feedback shift register) similar or identical to the one used by the sender to scramble the data. The LFSR is initialized by employing helper bits inserted by the sender or an initialization unit, and may employ other techniques for phase adjustment or state skipping depending on the nature of the transmitted bit stream.

Method and apparatus for processing bit-interleaved data traffic in a communication network

An optical line terminal transmitter front-end, an optical network terminal receiver front-end and a bit-interleaved passive optical network (BIPON). In one embodiment, the transmitter front-end includes: (1) a bit interleaver configured to group and interleave a plurality of user bit-streams to yield a combined single bit-stream, (2) an encoder coupled to the bit interleaver and configured to encode multiple bits of the single bit-stream into a multi-level code corresponding to a 2-level multi-level signal and (3) a multi-level modulator coupled to the encoder and configured to modulate the multi-level code into the 2-level multi-level signal.

Circuit and method for optical bit interleaving in a passive optical network using multi-level signals

A virtual personal computer is implemented in a communication system comprising a plurality of central offices each of which communicates with a plurality of client devices over a corresponding access network. A given one of the central offices comprises at least one compute server and at least one storage server. The virtual personal computer is configured by allocating physical processing resources of the compute server and physical storage resources of the storage server to that virtual personal computer. User access is provided to the virtual personal computer via one of the client devices. The virtual personal computer can be dynamically reconfigured by altering the allocation of at least one of the physical processing resources and the physical storage resources to the given virtual personal computer responsive to particular applications selected by the user to run on the given virtual personal computer.

A manner of providing an energy-efficient two-stage PON using a multistage-PON repeater to forward data traffic and other communications between the first stage and the second stage. The multistage-PON repeater receives BI-PON transmission frames from and OLT and decimates them, forwarding data intended for end devices of the second stage. The multistage-PON repeater rate adapts the transmissions so that faster speeds may be associated with PON first stage communications and slower speeds are associated with PON second stage communications. Many though not all of the multistage-PON components are configured to operate at the slower clock speed, conserving energy. Upstream transmissions from the end devices of the second stage are buffered in the multistage-PON repeater and forwarded to the OLT according to an allocation schedule received from the OLT in a BI-PON frame.

In one embodiment, the line termination card includes a data output terminal configured to output a data sequence. The card further includes a vectoring entity configured to parse and encode the data sequence into frequency samples according to a carrier loading parameter, configured to scale the frequency samples into scaled frequency samples according to a carrier scaling parameter, and, configured to process the scaled frequency samples for crosstalk compensation. A controller is configured to adjust the carrier loading parameter and the carrier scaling parameter, and a forwarder is coupled to the data output terminal and to the controller. A clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit, a method of recovering a clock and data from a received raw data stream and a BI-PON optical network transceiver (ONT) receiver front-end incorporating the CDR circuit. Systems and techniques for multiple bit rate optical data transmission. A passive optical network includes an optical line termination unit (OLT) connected to one or more optical network units (ONUs) by optical elements. The OLT is capable of performing downstream transmission to the ONUs at each of a variety of different bit rates, and each ONU performs upstream transmission at one or more bit rates. The OLT can sense a bit rate of a received transmission and change its operation so as to receive and process the transmission exhibiting the sensed bit rate. Each of the ONUs receives and processes downstream transmissions at one or more bit rates, but each ONU is capable of maintaining a phase and frequency lock to downstream transmissions at all bit rates supported by the OLT. One or more of the ONUs may also receive and process downstream transmissions exhibiting different or changed bit rates.

Methods and apparatus for achieving multiple bit rates in passive optical networks

An access node such as an OLT or DSLAM for use in a communications network. The access node performs a plurality of functions using in a number of function modules, each divided into one or more sub-modules. The status of the sub-modules is controlled by a controlled by a controller that reviews load statistics and other inputs and determines whether the configuration of the function module should be changed. If so, individual sub-modules are powered down, clock-gated, or returned to operational status. A traffic dispatcher positioned before each function module distributes the data traffic to available sub-modules for processing, after which it is aggregated by a traffic aggregator and passed on to the next stage. A number of circuit boards may be used, each containing only one or two function modules. The boards are connected by short, high-speed serial lines, which may have multiple links whose status may also be controlled.

Access node for a communications network

An access node of a communication system is configured to control crosstalk between channels of the system. Vectoring circuitry in the access node estimates crosstalk between channels of the system, generates a compressed representation of the crosstalk estimates, and generates compensated signals based on the compressed representation of the crosstalk estimates. The compressed representation comprises a value array and an index array, with the value array comprising selected values from each of a plurality of rows of a matrix representation of the crosstalk estimates, and the index array identifying locations of the selected values in the matrix representation of the crosstalk estimates. The compensated signals may be pre-compensated signals or post-compensated signals.

Efficient generation of compensated signals for crosstalk control in a communication system

The present invention relates to a crosstalk estimation device for estimating crosstalk between communication lines in a precoding group. The crosstalk estimation device comprises transmission means for transmitting a pilot sequence and reception means for receiving error feedback on one or more communication lines in the precoding group. The crosstalk estimation device further comprises crosstalk estimation means for combining the pilot sequence with the error feedback in order to obtain a crosstalk estimation between the communication lines. The device further comprises selection means for selecting a subset of one or more communication lines from the precoding group. The transmission means are adapted to transmit the pilot sequence only on the subset.

Device and associated method for crosstalk estimation

A multi-channel processing module is arranged in series with multiple channels of a communication system. The processing module synchronizes downstream symbols among the channels, and synchronizes downstream symbols for at least a given one of the channels with upstream symbols for that channel. The synchronization of downstream symbols among the channels and the synchronization of downstream symbols for at least the given channel with upstream symbols for that channel are collectively achieved by adjusting downstream and upstream adjustable delay elements associated with respective downlink and uplink signal paths in the multi-channel processing module. The channels may comprise respective subscriber lines of a DSL communication system.
