A method of controlling cooling water treatment at a cooling tower may involve measuring operating data of one or more downstream heat exchangers that receive cooling water from the cooling tower. For example, the inlet and outlet temperatures of both the hot and cold streams of a downstream heat exchanger may be measured, optionally along with a flow rate of the cooling water stream passing through the heat exchanger. Data from the streams passing through the heat exchanger may be used to determine a heat transfer efficiency for the heat exchanger. The heat transfer efficiency can be trended over a period of time and changes in the trend detected to identify cooling water fouling issues. A chemical additive selected to reduce, eliminate, or otherwise control the cooling water fouling can be controlled based on the changes in heat transfer efficiency detected at the downstream heat exchanger.

Cooling water monitoring and control system

Biomass is quickly becoming an important feedstock for energy generation in power plants. Due to their composition and nature, certain biomass fuels contribute to slagging, fouling, and corrosion. This invention provides a novel method of reducing or suppressing slag deposition and/or cleaning deposited slag in energy production processes in which potassium-containing solid fuels are combusted. Besides acting as a slag suppressant, further advantages of this invention are that the additive has no detrimental side-effects on capital equipment, increases slag friability, decreases slag fouling rate, reduces heat transfer corrosion as well as increasing the lifetime of the selective catalytic reduction catalyst.

Method for reducing slag in biomass combustion

Methods for facilitating the removal of mercury from flue gases by converting elemental mercury to oxidized mercury and subsequently capturing the oxidized mercury. In one aspect, a method of removing mercury from a mercury-containing flue gas may include the steps of introducing into the flue gas a sulfide source in an effective amount to convert elemental mercury to gaseous oxidized mercury and then capturing the gaseous oxidized mercury.

Method of oxidizing mercury in flue gas

Methods of forming a silica-containing products are disclosed. One method comprises: (a) providing a silica containing precursor (SCP) contained in solution that has a pH less than or equal to a pH of 7; (b) optionally doping the SCP with one or more metal species; (d) adding an effective amount of salt to the solution so that the conductivity of the solution is greater than or equal to 4 mS; (e) optionally filtering and drying the SCP; and (f) optionally reacting the dried product from step e with a functional group. Another method comprises: (a) providing a silica containing precursor (SCP) contained in solution that has a pH greater than 7; (b) adjusting the pH of the solution to less than or equal to 7; (c) optionally doping the SCP with one or more metal species; (d) adjusting the pH of the solution to greater than 7; and (e) adding an effective amount of salt to the solution so that the conductivity of the solution is greater than or equal to 4 mS; (f) optionally filtering and drying the SCP. The SCP is then added to a hygroscopic solid such that the resulting product comprises a metal oxide-doped or metal sulfide-doped silica-containing product deposited on a substrate selected from hydrated alkaline earth oxide, lanthanide oxide, and combinations thereof.

Silica particle manufacturing process

A silica-containing composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a compound having the following formula: (SiO)(OH)MOF.B: wherein M is at least one of the following: boron, magnesium, aluminum, calcium, titanium, vanadium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, zirconium, molybdenum, palladium, silver, cadmium, tin, platinum, gold, and bismuth; wherein F optionally exists and comprises at least one of the following: a functionalized organosilane, a sulfur-containing organosilane, an amine-containing organosilane, and an alkyl-containing organosilane at a surface area coverage of about 0.01 to about 100%. The molar ratio of y/x is equal to about 0.01 to about 0.5, the molar ratio of x/z is equal to about 0.5 to about 300, and the molar ratio of a/z is dependent on the nature of the metal oxide. B comprises a hygroscopic solid and preferably comprises at least one alkaline earth oxide, lanthanide oxide, or combinations thereof.

A silica-containing composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a compound having the following formula: (SiO)(OH)MSF.B. M comprises at least one metal or metalloid cation S is a sulfur-based species. F optionally exists and F is at least one of the following: a functionalized organosilane, a sulfur-containing organosilane, an amine-containing organosilane, and an alkyl-containing organosilane at a surface area coverage of about 0.01 to about 100%. The molar ratio of y/x is equal to about 0.01 to about 0.5, the molar ratio of x/z is equal to about 0.5 to about 300 or from about 0.5 to about 100, and the molar ratio of a/z is about 0.5 to about 5. B is a hygroscopic solid at a water to solid molar ratio of 0.1-6 and preferably comprises at least one alkaline earth oxide or lanthanide oxide.
