The present teaching, which includes methods, systems and computer-readable media, relates to providing query suggestions based on a number of data sources that include person's personal data and non-personal data. The disclosed techniques may include receiving an input from a person, obtaining a first set of suggestions based on a person corpus derived from at least one data source private to the person, obtaining a second set of suggestions based on information from an additional data source, ranking the first and second sets of suggestions to generate a ranked list of suggestions, and presenting at least some of the ranked suggestions.

Methods, systems and techniques for ranking personalized and generic search query suggestions

The present teaching, which includes methods, systems and computer-readable media, relates to providing query suggestions based on a number of data sources including person's personal data and non-personal data. The disclosed techniques may include receiving an input from a person, obtaining a first set of suggestions based on information from a first data source, presenting the first set of suggestions to the person, and presenting, to the person, a second set of suggestions obtained from a person corpus when a portion of the person corpus relevant to the input is accessible. The person corpus may be from a second data source that is private to the person.

Methods, systems and techniques for providing search query suggestions based on non-personal data and user personal data according to availability of user personal data

A location-aware search assist capability identifies location-aware search query suggestions using location information associated with the location-aware search query suggestions. A user's search query input and location and a location associated with each location-aware search query suggestion candidates may be used to identify a set of search query suggestions for presentation to the user. Location-aware search query suggestion candidates may be ranked in accordance with a closeness of each one's location to the user's location. The ranking may be performed using a score, such as a popularity score associated with each search query suggestion candidate. The location-aware search query suggestion candidates having a location closer to the user's location may be promoted by adjusting each candidate's popularity score upward, and the search query suggestion candidates that are farther away from the user's location may be demoted by adjusting each such candidate's popularity score downward.

Methods, systems and techniques for personalized search query suggestions

Systems and methods for providing content associated with trending topics relevant to a user are described. An interest detection module identifies topics trending in one or more real-time content sources that are relevant to a user. The real-time content source(s) may include, for example, a source of microblog posts or other user-generated data, a news feed, or the like. The topics trending that are relevant to the user are identified by comparing a search history of the user with one or more trending topics stored in a database. A content retriever module is configured to return one or more documents to the user in response to identifying the one or more topics trending that are relevant to the user.

System and method for recommending content based on search history and trending topics

Techniques are provided for automatically determining when to trigger instant search. In one technique, while a user is entering text to formulate a search query, and prior to receiving an indication that the user has completed formulation of the search query, a search assistant system determines the most popular queries that include the text the user has already entered. The search assistant system then determines whether to proactively provide, to the user, search results for the top-candidate of those completed queries. That determination may take into account factors such as whether the top-candidate qualifies as a dominant completed query, a richness metric determined for the search results for the particular completed query, and/or a satisfaction metric determined for the search results for the particular completed query. If the search assistant system determines to proactively provide search results for the particular completed query, the search results for the particular completed query are presented to the user prior to receiving any indication that the user has completed formulation of the search query.

Triggering method for instant search

A seasonality-aware search assist identifies seasonal search query suggestions using seasonal information associated with the seasonal search query suggestions. A user's search query input, temporal information associated with the user's search query input and a seasonal information associated with each seasonal-aware search query suggestion candidates may be used to identify a number of seasonal search query suggestions for presentation to the user. Seasonal search query suggestion candidates may be promoted in a list of search query suggestions presented to the user, and any non-seasonal search query suggestions included in the list may be positioned below the seasonal search query suggestions in the list. A popularity score associated with each of the listed seasonal search query suggestions may be used to order the seasonal search query candidates, and a popularity score associated with each of the listed non-seasonal search query suggestions may be used to order the non-seasonal search query suggestions.

Systems and methods for identifying candidate queries related to a trending topic based on a user query are described. A trending topic identification module identifies topics trending in one or more real-time content sources. The real-time content source(s) may include, for example, a source of microblog posts or other user-generated data, a news feed, or the like. A query recommendation module suggests at least one candidate query in response to receiving a user query. The query recommendation module obtains the at least one candidate query by comparing words and named entities of the user query with words and named entities associated with the trending topics identified by the trending topic identification module.
