Concepts and technologies directed to agile transport for background traffic in cellular networks are disclosed herein. In various aspects, a system can include a processor and memory storing instructions that, upon execution, cause performance of operations. The operations can include determining a capacity of a communication path that communicatively couples a user equipment to a radio access network cell site. The operations can include identifying, from the radio access network cell site, a queue that is constructed for the user equipment. The operations can include assembling a plurality of probe burst packet sets from a background traffic flow. The operations can include probing the communication path for spare capacity using the plurality of probe burst packet sets and delivering the background traffic flow to the user equipment using the spare capacity while the communication path is not busy.

Agile transport for background traffic in cellular networks

In various aspects, a system that comprises detecting a congestion event in a network that transmits a first group of data packets and a second group of data packets, wherein the detecting the congestion event comprises detecting the congestion event has initiated in response to a data packet throughput value of the network having been determined to have decreased below a threshold value; in response to the detecting of the congestion event, determine a transmission rate of the second group of data packets based on a transmission priority of the second group of data packets; determining a data packet dropping rate for the second group of data packets based on the transmission rate of the second group of data packets and a size of the first group of data packets and transmitting the second group of data packets utilizing the transmission rate and the data packet dropping rate.

Management of background data traffic for 5G or other next generations wireless network

Methods and apparatus to utilize network coding in a wireless network are disclosed. A disclosed example method includes receiving a first packet flow at a first node from a second node that is one-hop away from the first node, the first packet flow originating at a first source, receiving a second packet flow at the first node from a third node that is one-hop away from the first node, the second packet flow originating at a second source, generating, for the first packet flow, first intra-session parity packets using intra-session network coding and generating, for the second packet flow, second intra-session parity packets using intra-session network coding, the first and second intra-session parity packets being generated based on loss rates of links between the first and second nodes and the first and third nodes, and between the first node and a fourth node and between the first node and a fifth node, the fourth and fifth nodes being one-hop away from the first node, and combining at the first node the first and second packet flows and the first and second intra-session parity packets into a combined packet flow using inter-session network coding.

Methods and apparatus to utilize network coding in a wireless network

Methods and apparatuses to model the relation between the delay samples and congestion losses and to protect media flows against congestion losses are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises measuring congestion by delay samples, and performing a dynamic FEC algorithm that uses convex hull clustering for loss-event classification, including determining an FEC rate according to the loss-event classification. In another embodiment, the method comprises measuring congestion by delay samples, modeling loss events associated with the delay samples by grouping loss events as unions of convex hulls to identify a period of potentially increased congestion, dynamically changing the FEC rate based on the modeling, and applying FEC protection to the media flow during the period based on the FEC rate. In yet another embodiment, the method comprises forming clusters using past loss events and their {FTT, F{dot over (T)}T} or {RTT, R{dot over (T)}T} estimates, and estimating future loss events using most recent {FTT, F{dot over (T)}T} or {RTT, R{dot over (T)}T} estimates and their membership in convex hull clusters.
