Rapid lateral flow immunoassays have an extensive history of use in both the clinical and home settings. These devices are used to test for a variety of analytes, such as drugs of abuse, hormones, proteins, urine or plasma components and the like. The present invention provides an improved procedural control that indicates to the test user that at least a portion of the applied sample has passed through the test result zone of the test strip, and optionally that the test is complete and the test results may be read.

Lateral flow immunoassay controls

The present invention is directed novel lateral flow devices for analyzing liquid samples. The devices contain chemical test strips and are useful for testing liquids for physical properties, such as pH, specific gravity, contamination or adulteration, the presence of proteins or blood, and the like. The test strips contain a bibulous material, a filter element, a reagent pad, and in some embodiments also contain a hydrophobic member and a cover. Any fluid can be tested, for example, urine or other body fluids, environmental samples, biological samples, clinical samples, or food and beverage samples.

The present invention is a device for conveniently collecting and storing liquid samples, as well as applying an aliquot of the sample to a test device, such as a lateral flow immunoassay. The present invention comprises an absorbent swab and a dropper container containing an expression means for expressing the collected sample from the swab. After the collected sample has been expressed into the reservoir of the device, the device is capped. The device can be inverted over a test device, the sides of the reservoir squeezed and an aliquot of the sample applied, in a drop-wise manner, to the sample application well of the test device. The present invention is particularly useful for collecting viscous samples, such as saliva or oral fluid, in a drug of abuse testing setting.
