The invention pertains to a coating composition comprising a compound comprising at least one spiro-ortho silicate group and a hydroxyl-reactive cross-linker, to a process for curing the composition, and to the use of the composition. The coating composition of the current invention can be formulated to a coating composition having a low content of volatile organic solvents, is curable at a temperature as low as 5&#xb0; C., and the cured coating composition of the current invention is essentially free of unreacted low-molecular weight blocking agents. Further, the pot life: drying time ratio of coating compositions according to the invention is particularly favorable.

Photoactivatable coating composition comprising at least one photoinitiator and a base-catalysed polymerisable or curable organic material comprising at least one polyisocyanate and at least one compound containing isocyanate reactive groups, wherein the isocyanate reactive groups comprise at least one thiol group and the photoinitiator is a photolatent base. Preference is given to a coating composition wherein the photolatent base is selected from the group of N-substituted 4-(ortho-nitrophenyl)dihydropyridine, a quaternary organo-boron photoinitiator, and an &#x3b1;-amino acetophenone. The composition additionally may comprise an organic acid, a metal complex and/or a metal salt as a cocatalyst and/or a sensitiser selected from the group of thioxanthones, oxazines, rhodamines, and preferably from the group of benzophenone and derivatives thereof.

Photoactivatable coating composition

The invention pertains to a coating composition comprising a first compound comprising at least one bicyclo- or spiro-orthoester group and a second compound comprising at least two hydroxyl-reactive groups. The invention also comprises a process for curing the present coating composition. More particularly, the latent hydroxyl groups of the bicyclo- or spiro-orthoester groups have to be deblocked and reacted with the hydroxyl-reactive groups of the second compound if the present coating composition is to be cured. Further, a process for making bicyclo-orthoester compounds from the corresponding oxetane compound is described, as are polymers comprising at least one bicyclo- or spiro-orthoester group.

A non-aqueous coating composition based on an oxidatively drying alkyd resin and a photo-initiator. An acid or latent acid and one or more compounds of the group of vinyl ethers, acetals, and alkoxysilanes which are reactive in the presence of an acid are incorporated into the coating composition. The vinyl ethers, acetals, and alkoxysilanes preferably are covalently bounded to the alkyd resin. The ratio of the number of oxidatively drying groups present in the alkyd resin to the number of groups reactive in the presence of an acid preferably is in the range of 1/10 to 15/1. The acid preferably is the phosphoric acid dibutyl ester.

Non-aqueous coating composition based on an oxidatively drying alkyd resin and a photo-initiator

Proposed is a thermosetting powder coating composition comprising a mixture of particles reactive towards one another and a catalyst, with a portion of the reactive particles comprising a polymer reacting with epoxy to form ester forming or ether forming groups, while another portion comprises an at least bifunctional cross-linking agent which contains 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl groups, hereinafter referred to as cyclocarbonate groups, and, optionally, epoxy groups, with both the polymer reacting with epoxy to form ester forming and/or ether forming groups and the cross-linking agent being obtained by means of a non-vinylic addition and/or polymerization process. The catalyst used as ring opener for the cyclocarbonate groups is present in a quantity of 0.01 to 10, preferably 0.1 to 5, parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the mixture of particles reactive towards one another. The quantity of epoxy oxygen present in the cross-linking agent after CO.sub.2 unblocking preferably is at least 0.4 wt. %. The reactive polymer preferably is a polymer containing groups reactive towards epoxy such as carboxyl, anhydride and/or hydroxyl groups, with preference being given to polyesters and/or polyurethanes.

Thermosetting powder coating composition

Proposed is a thermosetting powder coating composition comprising a mixture of particles reactive towards one another, optionally in combination with a catalyst, with a portion of the reactive particles comprising a polymer reactive towards oxetane groups while another portion comprises an oxetane groups-containing cross-linking agent having an oxetane functionality of more than 1. The quantity of oxetane oxygen in the cross-linking agent preferably is at least 0.4 wt. %. The reactive polymer preferably is a polymer having groups reactive towards oxetane, such as carboxyl, epoxy, oxetane, anhydride, and hydroxyl, with preference being given to a polyester or a hydroxypolyacrylate.

A thermosetting coating composition is provided, which composition is based upon (A) an activated unsaturated group-containing compound, (B) an activated CH group-containing compound and (C) a strong basic catalyst, wherein the strong basic catalyst is blocked with a [particular] carboxylic acid which is volatile and/or undergoes decarboxylation under curing conditions. These coating compositions possess extended potlife, good curing speed, and a good balance of physical and mechanical properties making them especially well suited for a variety of coatings uses such as in paint, impregnating, sealing and bonding compositions.
