A simple solution processing method is developed to achieve uniform and scalable stabilized lithium metal powder coating on Li-ion negative electrode. A solvent and binder system for stabilized lithium metal powder coating is developed, including the selection of solvent, polymer binder and enhancement of polymer concentration. The enhanced binder solution is 1% concentration of polymer binder in xylene, and the polymer binder is chosen as the mixture of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) rubber (SBR) and polystyrene (PS). Long-sustained, uniformly dispersed stabilized lithium metal powder suspension can be achieved with the enhanced binder solution. A uniform stabilized lithium metal powder coating can be achieved with simple doctor blade coating method and the resulting stabilized lithium metal powder coating can firmly glued on the anode surface. With the prelithiation of negative electrode by stabilized lithium metal powder, improvements in electrochemical performances are demonstrated in both graphite/NMC and SiO/NMC full-cell.

A homologous series of cyclic carbonate or propylene carbonate (PC) analog solvents with increasing length of linear alkyl substitutes were synthesized and used as co-solvents with PC for graphite based lithium ion half cells. A graphite anode reaches a capacity around 310 mAh/g in PC and its analog co-solvents with 99.95% Coulombic efficiency. Cyclic carbonate co-solvents with longer alkyl chains are able to prevent exfoliation of graphite when used as co-solvents with PC. The cyclic carbonate co-solvents of PC compete for solvation of Li ion with PC solvent, delaying PC co-intercalation. Reduction products of PC on graphite surfaces via single-electron path form a stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI), which allows the reversible cycling of graphite.

Co-solvents with high coulombic efficiency in propylene carbonate based electrolytes

A composite electrode prepared from silicon-graphene material and conductive polymer binder poly (1-pyrenebutyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) for use in lithium-ion batteries.

The invention demonstrates that only 2% functional conductive polymer binder without any conductive additives was successfully used with a micron-size silicon monoxide (SiO) anode material, demonstrating stable and high gravimetric capacity (&#x3e;1000 mAh/g) for &#x2dc;500 cycles and more than 90% capacity retention. Prelithiation of this anode using stabilized lithium metal powder (SLMP&#xae;) improves the first cycle Coulombic efficiency of a SiO/NMC full cell from &#x2dc;48% to &#x2dc;90%. This combination enables good capacity retention of more than 80% after 100 cycles at C/3 in a lithium-ion full cell. We also demonstrate the important connection between porosity and the loading of silicon electrodes. By employing a highly porous silicon electrode, a high areal capacity (3.3 mAh/cm) is obtained. This method works well to achieve high loading of other high-capacity alloy anodes, the state-of-art graphite anode, as well as a high loading of positive electrodes for LIBs.

Porous silicon oxide (SiO) anode enabled by a conductive polymer binder and performance enhancement by stabilized lithium metal power (SLMP)

A Poly(1-pyrenemethyl methacrylate-co-dopamine methacrylamide) PPyDMA polymer binder has been designed and fabricated, and has demonstrated an excellent performance for silicon (Si), graphite and a metal alloy anode materials. The PPyDMA polymer binder demonstrates the great potential of a catechol moiety for use in a lithium-ion battery.
