A wireless communication system using cells to provide wireless access to services, comprising a first base station installed on board a public transportation vehicle to provide a moving cell, and a second base station installed at a stop at which users enter or leave the vehicle, to provide a fixed cell. A central controller guides handovers of users entering or leaving the vehicle. The first and second base stations to provide data concerning users to the central controller, and the central controller, over many journeys of the vehicle, gathers profile data of users based on the data provided by the base stations. As the vehicle approaches a stop, the central controller makes predictions about users likely to enter and leave the vehicle, and, provides guidance to the first and second base stations for performing handovers.

Group handover with moving cells

Disclosed is a method for use in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication network in which the network includes a plurality of cells provided by one or more base stations operable to transmit signals on at least one downlink to, and receive signals on at least one uplink from, one or more user equipments. A user equipment feeds back to the network reports on channel state information, CSI, relating to one or more channels between base stations and that user equipment, and base stations adapt downlink signals to user equipments based on the CSI reports, the method including: identifying uplink resources for a user equipment-initiated channel state message; the user equipment judging a need for a user equipment-initiated channel state message based on information not available to the network; and the user equipment sending the user equipment-initiated channel state message to the network using the uplink resources identified.

Channel state feedback for multi-cell MIMO

A load balancing method in a WLAN having access points () each providing service to terminals () which are within range of the access points and associated with the access points, the method comprising identifying (S, S) overloaded access points, unsatisfied terminals and under-loaded access points; determining (S), for each overloaded access point, how many M among N unsatisfied terminals associated with the access point, where N&#x3e;=M&#x3e;=1, need to re-associate with an under-loaded access point in order to satisfy all the unsatisfied terminals associated with the access point; constructing (S), for each overloaded access point, one or more sets of M unsatisfied terminals; and finding (S-S), for each overloaded access point and each set of M unsatisfied terminals, an under-loaded access point with which every terminal in the set of M can be re-associated in order to satisfy all the N unsatisfied terminals associated with the overloaded access point. The load balancing method may be carried out by a LB Server () applied to an enterprise-wide WLAN.

QoE optimization in wireless networks

A wireless local area network, WLAN, comprising: access points arranged to maintain wireless links with terminals each arranged to initiate a wireless link with an access point, and to associate with an access point during a service session. A central association server is connected to each of the access points, and is arranged to gather information from a plurality of the terminals via the wireless links between terminals and access points, determine, based on the gathered information, with which access point a terminal which has initiated a wireless link should associate during its service session, and notify the terminal, via the access point with which the terminal initiated the wireless link, of the access point so determined.

Relieving congestion in wireless local area networks

A method for use in selecting a cell or cells, from amongst a set of cells in a cellular wireless network, for coordinated use in multi-cell multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) transmission so as to reduce feedback overhead, each cell of the said set having at least one MIMO channel characteristic which may vary with time at a measurable rate, comprises a cell selection process comprising the steps of: identifying a cell or subset of cells of the said set for which the time variation rate/rates of the said MIMO channel characteristic is/are the slowest of those of the cells in the said set; and selecting a cell or cells for use in multi-cell MIMO transmission from only the cell or subset of cells identified in the identifying step.

Cell selection for multi-cell MIMO transmission

A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems that includes a plurality of adjacent cells, each containing one or more base stations operable to transmit signals to, and receive signals transmitted from, one or more users. The users are operable to feed back to the relevant base station(s) channel state information relating to channel(s) between the relevant base station(s) and the users, and the base stations are operable to adapt signals for transmission to users, based on the fed back channel state information, to account for channel variations. The proposed method involves obtaining information related to time-variation in channel spatial structure, and adjusting the timing with which a user feeds back channel state information, based on the time variation in channel spatial structure. The invention helps to achieve a suitable balance between the feedback overhead and system performance, and may be operable in systems operating according to various CoMP transmission modes.

A method of selecting a cell or cells for use in multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) transmission to user equipment or a relay station in a serving cell of a cellular wireless network, there being a set of N cells of the cellular network from which a selection of cells is to be made, N being an integral number greater than one and the set including the serving cell, the received signal power of the serving cell and the received interference power of the other cells in the set relative to the serving cell are sorted in descending order of power P, such that P&#x2267;P&#x2267; . . . &#x2267;P, and a group of M cells are selected from the said set of N cells, where the cells selected are those giving the smallest value of M for which the inequality is satisfied, &#x3b2; being a first decision threshold parameter.
