An apparatus () and method () for rendering a tree structure in a GUI depending on a position of a pointing cursor relative to the rendered tree use the cursor position with respect to the tree to control which tree branches to expand/collapse automatically. They reconfigure the tree view for compact presentation without need for explicit expand/collapse operations. A tree view is generated (). A cursor position relative to the view is determined (), consisting of first and second position values according to first and second directions. The branch the cursor position is aligned with according to the first direction is automatically selected as active branch (). Sub-levels of that branch to be expanded are determined (), depending on the second position value relative to indentations of the sub-levels, and the tree view is automatically updated by expanding the determined sub-levels of the active branch and collapsing other branches ().

Data processing apparatus and method for rendering a tree structure

Optical storage media often contain data structures for a menu suitable for selection of a title, a chapter, a parameter or others. Such menus usually comprise a number of buttons to be displayed, with each button having a state. Possible states of buttons are 'unselected', 'selected' or &#x201c;activated&#x201d;. According to the invention, the representation of a menu button may vary, depending on its state. An image or an image sequence, e.g. cartoon, may be associated to a buttons state, providing user animation. Further, a sound or sound sequence, e.g. melody or click, may be associated to a buttons state, and may be played back when the button enters this state. A data structure is disclosed which allows storage of such menu data e.g. on a Blu-ray disc.

An analyzing unit determines a priority value of the metadata item using one of a plurality of prioritization methods. Available storage media capacity for personal video recording increases continuously. metadata can be used to organize the recordings, search for content and access specific recordings. If metadata are embedded within the multimedia content itself, like DVB specific Service Information, which are multiplexed with the audio and video streams to form a MPEG-2 transport stream, a search based on this metadata would require an inefficient and time consuming search through all multimedia content stored. According to the invention metadata information is gathered, analyzed and processed to form metadata entities, which are amended by a reference to the content itself. A descriptor stream is formed from the resulting pairs of metadata entities and references to the content and is stored separately from the files comprising multimedia content. In this way, for data of an MPEG-2 transport stream the metadata can be accessed without a need to reparse the entire stream.

A distributed storage system able to support real-time recording of streaming data shall be provided. Therefore, on the basis of Material Exchange Format (MXF) formatted files a data stream is packed into at least a first MXF formatted file and a second formatted MXF file. First connection data are inserted into the first MXF formatted file, wherein this first connection data points to the second MXF formatted file. Furthermore, second connection data are inserted into the second MXF formatted file, wherein the second connection data points to the first MXF formatted file. These connection data inserted as metadata into the MXF formatted files enable both seamless real-time stream recording and stream-able data playback.

The present invention relates to a data transport container for transferring a number n of different types of data in an Internet Protocol network. The number n is superior or equal to 2, and data is generated as Ethernet Jumbo packets, wherein the data transport container is an Internet Protocol packet. The invention also relates to a source device and to a destination device respectively for transferring and receiving such a data transport containers. At least, the invention relates to a method for transferring n different types of data being generated as Gigabit Ethernet RTP-UDP-IP jumbo packets. It is desired to link photo data and video data taken by a digital camcorder. Therefore, there is provided a device and method for linking multimedia data, wherein linking information is formed on the basis of first and/or second multimedia data. The linking information is stored on a recording medium together with the first multimedia data. The second multimedia data may be stored together with respective linking information to the first multimedia data on a second recording medium. Thus, a camera-man while recording is able to set up logo or index pictures for a video film.

Search in stocks of data, particularly on optical media, is intended to be optimized in terms of the time required for the search. It is therefore proposed that the search be carried out in two steps. In a first search step, the entire database is scanned on the disk storage medium. In a second search step, executed in parallel, intermediate results from the first search step are searched. This allows the number of skips on a disk to be reduced, which results in increases of speed, particularly in the case of optical drives.
