Improved formulations of electrophoretic media that can be incorporated into displays, front plane laminates, inverted front plane laminates, or color changing films. The formulations include a non-polar fluid, a plurality of first charged particles, and charge control agents (CCA) including a quaternary amine and an unsaturated polymeric tail comprising monomers of at least 10 carbon atoms in length. The formulations show improved switching speeds, as well as a larger dynamic range at low temperatures (i.e., below about 0° C.), where compared to state-of-the-art electrophoretic media.

A method for collimating light using a film including elongated chambers of bistable electrophoretic fluids. The light-collimating films are suitable to control the amount and/or direction of light incident to a transmissive substrate. Such films may be integrated into devices, such as LCD displays, to provide a zone of privacy for a user viewing the LCD display. Because the light-collimating film is switchable, it allows a user to alter the collimation of the emitted light on demand. Because the films are bistable, they do not require additional power after they have been switched to a display state.

An electrophoretic display medium includes a front and a rear electrode, at least one of the front and rear electrodes being transparent, and an encapsulated dispersion fluid containing a plurality of pigments positioned between the front and rear electrode. The plurality of pigments includes a first and a second type of organic pigment particle. The first type of organic pigment particle has a first color and a first charge polarity. The second type of organic pigment particle has a second color different from the first color and a second charge polarity the same as the first charge polarity. At least one of the first and second types of organic pigment particle includes a silica coating and a polymeric stabilizer covalently bonded to the silica coating.

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic display device comprising microcells filled with an electrophoretic fluid and a dielectric layer, which comprises a first type of magnetic filler material, a second type of nonmagnetic filler material, and a polymeric material. The first and second types of filler material physically interact with each other and they are fixed and aligned in the dielectric adhesive layer in a direction perpendicular to a plane of the dielectric layer. The dielectric layer exhibits anisotropic conductivity having higher conductivity in the z direction compared to the other two orthogonal directions.

An electrophoretic display including a passive matrix formed of row and column electrodes with an electrophoretic medium including two types of differently-colored charged particles disposed between the row and column electrodes. When the device is driven to a first color state by providing a voltage differential of 15V, the color state is stable for voltage differentials between 15V and &#x2212;5V. The display switches to the second color state when a voltage differential of &#x2212;15V is provided.

An active molecule delivery system whereby active molecules can be released on demand and/or a variety of different active molecules can be delivered from the same system and/or different concentrations of active molecules can be delivered from the same system. The active delivery system includes a plurality of microcells, wherein the microcells are filled with a medium including an active ingredient and charged or magnetic particles. The microcells include an opening, and the opening is spanned by a porous diffusion layer. Because the porous diffusion layer can be blocked with the charged or magnetic particles, the rate at which the active ingredient is dispensed can be controlled with an electric or magnetic field, respectively.

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic display device comprising (a) microcells filled with an electrophoretic fluid, and (b) at least one dielectric layer which comprises at least two types of filler. Among the types of filler, at least one type is sensitive to a magnetic field.

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic fluid which comprises additive particles. The concentration of the additive particles in the electrophoretic fluid does not exceed 25% by weight and the additive particles are not seen at the viewing side during operation of the display. The resulting fluid can improve optical performance of a display device, such as image stability and contrast ratio. The present invention is also directed to an electrophoretic display comprising the electrophoretic fluid.
