The tuyere comprises a substantially cylindrical or slightly convergent frusto-conical downstream part, and a divergent frusto-conical upstream part; the plasma torch is placed co-axially to the tuyere at the inlet to the upstream part thereof; the solid materials injection nozzle issues at an angle into the upstream part of the tuyere and the angle of taper of the upstream part of the tuyere substantially corresponds to the angle of natural expansion of the plasma jet, so that said materials are carried with the plasma jet and that part of them are provided onto the inner wall of the tuyere.

Device for injecting divided solid materials in a smelting blast furnace

A gas-injection lance has a main tube centered on an axis and having a lower end formed adjacent the axis with a plurality of throughgoing inner orifices and an upper end to which is fed a treatment gas under pressure that pressurizes the interior of the tube therewith sufficiently that the gas exits from the lower end through the inner orifices at supersonic speed. An annular array of nozzles traversing the lower tube end around the inner orifices each have an outer end opening outside of the tube and an inner end inside the tube. Respective pressure-reducers each have one side open at the lower tube end inside the tube and another side connected to the inner end of a respective nozzle for passing gas from the interior of the tube into the nozzles with a substantial pressure reduction so that the gas exits from the outer ends of the nozzles at subsonic speed. The pressure-reducers each comprise a body forming a chamber of predetermined flow cross section into which the respective inner nozzle end opens and an inlet on the body having an opening of flow cross section much smaller than that of the chamber and of the respective nozzle.

Oxygen lance for steel converter

A lance for blowing an oxydizing gas onto a bath of molten metal, especially for blowing oxygen on a bath of molten pig iron for transforming the same into steel. The lance is provided in an end wall of its nose with at least one central aperture for blowing gas jets at great impulsion onto the bath and a plurality of auxiliary apertures for blowing gas streams of considerably smaller impulsion onto the bath. The auxiliary apertures are constituted by elongated slots through the end wall arranged spaced from each other along a circle at a distance of adjacent edges of the slots and that at least one main aperture of about 2-20 cm. This construction permits to improve the amount of secondary combustion of the reaction gas while prolonging the useful life of the nose of the lance. The lance is advantageously used in conjunction with blowing a stirring gas through the bath of molten metal through refractory gas permeable elements provided in the bottom of a crucible containing the bath.

A metallurgical induction heating apparatus has an upwardly cupped induction coil having a housing formed with an upper rim and containing a heavy-duty coil. A crucible formed of a metallic base pan and a metallic holding collar interconnected by a plurality of upright tubular tierods so as to clamp a multiplicity of refractory bricks has an annular upper support body which extends outwardly beyond an upper mounting ring to which the upper ends of the tierods are connected and which rests on the rim of the induction heater. Means is provided for circulating a coolant fluid upwardly through the tierods and into an annular compartment formed inside the support body. A hood may be placed over this arrangement in gas-tight contact with the upper surface of the annular body so that the interior of the crucible can be evacuated or filled with an inert gas.

Metallurgical induction heating apparatus

A crucible for an induction heating apparatus has a base pan and a collar between which lies a refractory lining. Respective lower and upper mounting rings secured to the base pan and the collar are vertically interconnected by an annular array of non-round-section tierods that are tubular so a coolant can be passed through them. These tierods further have angularly juxtaposed sides which define spaces of outwardly decreasing angular width. Wedge-shaped blocks of refractory and electrically insulating material tightly fit between the sides of the rods and are of outwardly decreasing angular width. Inside these blocks the crucible is lined with further layers of refractory material.
