Improved process for reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen. The reactant gases circulate downwardly in admixture with a liquid phase of inert diluent through a fixed bed catalyst. The superficial velocity of each of the gas phase and the liquid phase is at least 1.5 cm per second, preferably 3 to 20 cm per second. The products are hydrocarbons, for example methane, or alcohols, for example methanol, depending on the catalyst.

Process for operating highly exothermic reactions

At least one of propene and butene is oligomerized, preferably dimerized, in an elongate cylindrical reaction zone. A recycle flow and the fresh feed charge are injected tangentially into said reaction zone. The catalyst preferably comprises a nickel compound and a hydrocarbyl aluminum halide.

Process for producing propene and/or butene oligomers

An improved radial reactor for hydrocarbon conversion is provided, having a new catalyst collector whose center is located nearer to the internal wall than to the external wall of the annular enclosure for receiving the moving catalyst bed.

Apparatus for converting hydrocarbons

An ether is prepared by reacting a selected olefin with an alcohol in a two reaction zone system: in the first reaction zone, the catalyst is dispersed in the liquid phase of the reactants and boiling of the mixture is avoided; in the second reaction zone, the catalyst is in a fixed bed. A cooled recycle stream is fed back to the first stage reactor. The catalyst is a sulfonated ion exchange resin in the acid form.
