The present invention provides polynucleotide sequences from FAE1 genes. FAE1 genes encode elongation enzymes which catalyze the conversion of C18 FAs to C20-C22 FAs. The polynucleotides of the invention are used to modify FAE1 gene expression and thereby modulate FA content in plant organs or parts, particularly seeds.

Polynucleotides encoding Pea ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase subunits are provided that are useful for changing the phenotype of higher plants, especially the garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) and other legumes, in regard to starch and sucrose biosynthesis. In particular, the invention relates to affecting the sucrose and starch content of edible plants.

The present invention provides compositions and methods for regulating vacuolar pH. Isolated DNA constructs comprising sequences substantially identical to a Ph gene are provided. The methods typically involve introducing the construct into a plant, whereby vacuolar pH is modified in the transgenic plant.

This invention relates to improved methods for transposon tagging as a route to plant gene isolation. The specific improvements comprise efficient means for preselecting plants which have undergone transposition. Through use of this preselection, it is possible to substantially reduce the number of plants which must be inspected to locate individuals having the transposon excised and inserted into a gene of interest. The result is a substantial savings in time, costs and efficiency associated with growing and screening large numbers of plants for tagging and isolation of a desired plant gene.
